| I'm using an 002R and want to get some new microphone pre's. I have a Sytek MPX-4Aii that I love, but I would like to have four more channels of quality pre's to replaces the stock 002s. The JLM Baby Animals sound like a very affordable deal, but how difficult is it to put them together? I've built a computer from parts, is it a lot like that? Also, which kit would I need if I wanted 2 or 4 pre's? |

I just built these and they are great. Very nice, airy, versatile pres. I have been told that they're kinda Neve-y but I haven't had the pleasure, personally.
Anyway, they were a VERY easy build, in terms of the number of parts (few), and the degree to which they're cramped on the boards (not very). But documentation is pretty sketchy, and you have to find out a lot of crucial information from a 50-page thread at The Lab at Prosoundweb. Very annoying.
All the same, I did it in a day, then spent a couple of days troubleshooting a problem that turned out to be nothing but a stray filament of solder that fell on the channel 3 PCB.
I bought the BA4 "everything" kit, ($920 shipped, and it came FAST from Australia) which contains JLM's own 99v opamp, the case, the wire (not enough, IMHO), the solder, the pots, the XLR jacks, etc etc. Joe Malone was super patient and helpful with me. Just know two things: all you need to know is on the BA web page, or linked to it. It's all there, just spread all over the place. And THERE ARE NO ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS PER SE.
Highly recommended. I love 'em. _________________ New album out now! clicky |

| I might give it a shot. I don't know of anything else in the price range besides the Sytek that has 4 microphones pre's or every a two channel between $400-$600 that's worth the investment. |

The Hamptone JFET is a little more expensive per channel, and harder to build, but is awesome and has a complete set of step by step instructions. _________________ New album out now! clicky |

Have you seen the SC-1 from FiveFish? $99 per channel (plus PSU & case), a very easy build and sounds similar to my DAV preamp - quiet, super-clean, loads of gain. Build instructions and support are excellent. There are also plans to add switchable output transformers and several other goodies.

No connection, just a satisfied user (with 3 more to build) |

I also have a Sytek and have built some JLM stuff also.
On the upside the BA's have DI's on channels 1 & 2
and a pad on each channel which the Sytek doesnt have.
Here is the Prodigy Pro BA thread on various BA builds.
There is a great deal of info on that forum and Joe and
Matt from JLM often answer questions also. _________________

That's the thread I meant, the Prodigy Pro one.
Part of the reason the BA's are a little complicated to figure out is that they're built to be customizable and adaptable--you can make small changes to the circuit in order to use different opamps and transformers.
And yes on the pads...very handy! _________________ New album out now! clicky |

True.
Which can be a little daunting if its your first build. But in reality it is fairly straight forward
as most of the time you just have to match components to the PCB.
I havent built the BA's but the 1290 kit i built did have a wiring overlay available.
The BA page seems thorough enough, but step by step instructions would be invaluable also. _________________
