September's MSP Audio Geeks Meetup is Wednesday, September 23rd at the Pavek Museum of Broadcasting. We will be taking a guided tour of the museum. Due to the museum's weekday hours this meetup starts at 3:30pm. The tour lasts around 75-90 minutes. There will be a small per person cost for the tour - approximately $7-12. The exact cost for the tour will be determined by the final head count. Please arrive 10 minutes early so we can wrangle people & cash.

We have one of the finest collections of antique radio, television, and broadcast equipment in the world. The Museum has gained international recognition for its continuing efforts to preserve and document the history of an industry that has made monumental changes in the fabric of modern life."

October’s MSP Audio Geeks meetup is Wednesday, October 21st from 7-9pm. Davide Raso and Owen Sartori of F5 Soundhouse will be our hosts. This month special guest Kyle Frenette, co-founder of Middle West Management, will be joining us to talk about the management side of the music business.

From the F5 website: “F5 is a boutique recording facility in the heart of the Minneapolis music scene. It incorporates the best in analog gear with modern recording and editing technology for a great-sounding, well-rounded product. We have, in total, four studios: two control rooms (studios A and B), a vocal room, a live room, a midi/editing suite (studio C), and a practice/performance room (Studio D).

From the Middle West website: “Middle West is an artist management firm founded on the acute quiet of Midwestern work ethic. Independently strong since 2010, Middle West is dedicated to fostering good music and the musicians who make it in the most professional and diverse of ways within the ever-changing landscape of its industry. With offices in Minneapolis, MN, Brooklyn, NY, and Durham, NC, Middle West also offers label and business management services to its artists.

Co-founded by Kyle Frenette on the strength and experience of Bon Iver, Middle West began as just an idea on how to structure a new type of artist management firm. It has since grown into an evolving experiment that’s mission is to cultivate the next generation of artist managers. Middle West strives to establish a collaborative and professional environment for its managers to flourish, perfect their skills and provide the absolute best services they can for their artists. This is accomplished by way of a shared brain trust between all managers and personnel as well as Middle West’s atypical linear business model in which all members of the greater team are encouraged to contribute, learn and grow alongside each other and as a whole within the firm.”

December's MSP Audio Geeks meetup will be on Monday, December 21st. John Miller of Secret Stash Records will be our host, and special guest Chris Mara of Welcome to 1979 and Mara Machines will be joining us. Come spend an evening with Chris as he demonstrates creative ways to use tape machines with DAW setups, talks about tape machine restoration and ownership, and spills some in-depth tips and tricks.

Chris Mara is a recording engineer, owner of Nashville’s Welcome To 1979 recording studio, and owner of Mara Machines; the largest analog tape machine restoration company in the world. Mara’s passion for recording led to founding the analog-centric Welcome To 1979; which has clients such as Pete Townshend, Eric Burdon and Third Man Records. Welcome To 1979 is also heavily involved in the vinyl industry via its vinyl mastering department, which cuts vinyl masters for Sony Records, Warner Records, Compass Records and Concord Records, Secret Stash Records, along with many, many independent artists.

John Miller is Chief Engineer at Secret Stash Records, an independent record label based in Minneapolis releasing reissues and compilations as well as new 45s, LPs, and CDs. The Secret Stash studio was built in Winter/Spring of 2015 as an analog-focused studio with a completely integrated digital side. The studio was built with the needs of the house band (The Lakers, of Sonny Knight and The Lakers fame) in mind, but since opening, they have done projects ranging from Afrobeat to Krautrock to Indie and back.

PostPosted: Mon Apr 04, 2016 11:07 pm    Post subject: April 2016 MSP Audio Geeks meetup - Saturday 4/23 Reply with quote

April's meetup is Saturday, April 23rd from 3-6pm at GLITCH. This month we will be attending the Minneapolis Summit of Sound: Video Game Edition, a special event put on by fellow audio geek Rachel Mogck. Rachel has put together a great afternoon that will include panels, exhibits, demos, and more. Rachel is producing this event as part of her senior project for her B.S. in Music Industry at Minnesota State University, Mankato.

Minneapolis Summit of Sound: Video Game Edition, hosted at GlitchHQ, will be a fusion of audio and video games with events so everyone, regardless of primary interest, will be able to have an engaging experience. The main events will be a series of Q&A panels: one covering general video game development and one covering sound design for video games. There will also be game demos and other happenings throughout the venue to keep this an interactive experience and encourage growth in both the audio and video game communities.

From the GLTICH website: "GLITCH promotes the exploration of digital games as a culture, career, and creative practice. We’re a nonprofit that works to educate, inspire, and equip emerging makers with the tools for success in the digital game and simulation fields.

Our organization supports emerging creators, makers, thinkers, and doers of new work in digital games whose developing voices reveal significant potential and:
  • who are not recognized as established by other creators, curators, producers, and critics.
  • who take risks and embrace challenges in their approach to creation, production, & promotion.
The event is free, but there is a $5 suggested donation. Feel free to invite your friends for a fun afternoon of audio geekery!

Stay tuned for more details about the afternoon's happenings. If you would like more information about the event, please contact Rachel Mogck at mplssummitofsound at gmail dot com

This month we are excited to present not one but two meetups! The first meetup will be on Tuesday, May 24th from 7-9pm at the A-Mill Artist Lofts in Minneapolis. Lance Conrad, head producer and owner of Humans Win!, a music production company and recording studio, will be our host. We will meet on the 7th floor club room where there is a rooftop patio, take a tour of the facility, and then head into a music rehearsal room where Lance will present an Ableton Live tutorial.

From the A-Mill Artist Lofts website:
"Designed for artists who are committed to a life in the arts, A-Mill Artist Lofts has a number of shared work and studio spaces for use by the residents free of charge." From music rehearsal and multimedia rooms to painting, dance, ceramics, photography, and flex studios, there is something for everyone.

A bit about Lance Conrad and Humans Win!:

We are excited to announce that we have rescheduled the First Ave. behind-the-scenes tour, a joint event with the Minneapolis chapter of SoundGirls.Org, for Monday, June 20th at 3pm. Special thanks to Holly Ann Latcham, Hippo Campus PM/FOH engineer and instigator of the Minneapolis SoundGirls.Org chapter, for coordinating this event!

From the SoundGirls.Org website:
"SoundGirls.Org was formed in 2013 by veteran live sound engineers Karrie Keyes and Michelle Sabolchick Pettinato and operates under the Fiscal Sponsorship of The Northern California Women’s Music Festival, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.

Mission Statement: To inspire and empower the next generation of women in audio. Our mission is to create a supportive community for women in audio and music production, providing the tools, knowledge, and support to further their careers."

Greg Huber, head tech of First Ave., will be showing us a behind-the-scenes tour of the live sound system. This tour is an educational outing for local new and old audio professionals alike to come in and see how things are run in a 1200 CAP venue. It will give many the chance to wrap their heads around the science behind setting up systems, the kind of power and processing it takes, the standard gear that is popular amongst many clubs of similar size, along with many other audio-related topics that we can nerd out about!

Please RSVP to mspaudiogeeks at gmail dot com if you are able to attend.

July's MSP Audio Geeks meetup is on Wednesday, July 27th, 2016 from 6-9pm at The Pearl Recording Studio, hosted by founder, engineer, and producer Zachary Hollander. We'll be recording simultaneously to analog tape and a DAW and then comparing the two. Zach will also share some tips & tricks for getting great sounds.

From the website:
"The Pearl Recording Studio was founded by brothers Zachary and Noah Hollander in the spring of 2010. Our main objective at The Pearl is to provide professional recordings with the highest quality of sound possible. We strive for excellence in everything we do and pay close attention to every detail, cutting corners on nothing. Our goal is to see every artist satisfied with a project they are proud of.

Zachary Hollander's love for recording started at the age of sixteen when he won two microphones in a local music competition. In 2002 he opened his first recording studio, Silver Fox Records, in the Black Hills of South Dakota. After local success in recording regional projects he moved to Orlando, Florida to further his recording education at Full Sail University. After receivng his degree in Recording Arts he started his internship at the legendary Pachyderm Recording Studio in Cannon Falls, MN. After becoming a staff engineer at Pachyderm, Zachary worked on countless recordings from different genres. He has recorded thousands of songs and continues to dedicate his life to making beautiful recordings."

August’s MSP Audio Geeks meetup is on Wednesday, August 31st at 7pm at Green River Recordings. We will be joining an event organized and presented by fellow audio geek and Cade Michaels Management founder James Davis.

This month is about selecting the right merch to sell. Setting a strategy on what to buy, how to sell it, and ultimately, connect with more fans and make more money.

Too many closets and garages are full merchandise that the fans didn’t want and James is going to show you how to take only the necessary risks in purchasing and how to repurpose product that isn’t selling.

Highlights of This Meeting:
    - Best Kinds of Merchandise
    - Proof of Concept
    - Forms of Payment
    - Merchandise Marketing
    - AND YOUR SPECIFIC MERCH QUESTIONS!

About James:
“I’ve traveled the country helping musicians make a living with their craft. I’ve worked with some of the biggest names in entertainment and have had a BLAST doing it. I look forward to meeting you and helping anyway I can.”

About Ben & Green River Recordings:
Green River Recordings is a spacious fully floated digital multi track recording studio located in Maple Grove. Green River was founded in 2009 by Ben Perecman, in an effort to seize upon the potential of the space. Since then Ben has slowly built up the studio from its modest beginnings to its current state. Most recently Green River has expanded to incorporate a green screen for video production.

Come early, pick the brains of others who have done it or just come and hang out at a cool studio. We have limited seating so please come on time.

Feel free to invite your friends and BYOB. Due to the limited capacity of this event, please RSVP here or by emailing mspaudiogeeks at gmail dot com.
