Here's a great thread from Gearslutz that goes into some nice detail about recording Cake, one of my personal favorites.
I don't think it classic, but there are some who migh dig this Gearslutz thread about Extreme's Pornograffitti. _________________ Tony

I just found this video via Stumbleupon, Nirvana's "Nevermind", I will have to watch the whole thing later (it's 72 minutes?). Cobain overdubbed 5 layers of guitar? That doesn't sound "grungy". Good.

Hey Chris - Thanks for taking the time and making the effort to create such a valuable resource. Definitely interested in these kinds of resources. Some of my favorite articles in Tape Op and other zines are about how records were made and what was used to make them.
I appreciate it and look forward to more.
All the best! _________________ Chris -

Here's a link to a You Tube video with a voice over by Adrian Barber talking about the making of Aerosmith's Dream On which was done at Intermedia Studios in Boston. Intermedia, one of the first studios to have 16 track recording, was eventually purchased by The Cars and renamed Synchro Sound. Sadly, as far as I know, it no longer exists as a studio in any incarnation. Hope you enjoy this:

Here's a video (well, the audio is more important - the video is annoying at times) on the making of 10cc's "I'm Not in Love". I always wondered how they got that vocal sound. It seems like McCartney's "Take It Away" had a touch of that too on the backing vox toward the end, I think the guitarist from 10cc was on that record?

I just saw that yesterday. It's pretty cool. Similar to what Pink Floyd did with the glasses on "Shine ON You Crazy Diamond."

I'm not sure this falls into "classic recordings". I would ague that Big Black was important but not critical. Anyway, some info on the drum machine sound they achieved from the architect's own mouth:
