|
|
i just got a new computer. WOOHOO! it's a big upgrade for me from a AMD 64 3500 to a intel quad core. both computers have 2 gb of ram.
should i consider gettting more than 2 gb of ram for my new computer or is the increased processing going to be so significant that increasing the RAM is not necessary?
i should say that i don't use a TON of vst instruments - maybe 2 once in a while. sometimes 1 - often i use none. but i upgraded because i was really maxing out my old computer on mixes with high track counts and lots of plug ins running.
any thoughts would be appreciated. _________________ the new rules : there are no rules |

Get as much RAM as you can afford, especially if you're stuck with Vista. _________________ "Advice is what we ask for when we already know the answer but wish we didn't." ~ Erica Jong

What OS are you using? If Xp, get two more gb and your cpu can use a tad over 3 gb with certain tweaking. If you are using Vista... you can use much more... though Vista is still experiencing problems a year after it's release.
BTW... I have a Q6600 on the abit p35pro oc'd to 3.0. Smoking! _________________ Steve Stallings

Oh yeah... Quite smoking!
You don't need more than 4gb. Xp can't address it.
Where did you get your DAW? Mine is a rackmount from Jim Roseberry @ studiocat. _________________ Steve Stallings

i only have 2 gb - i am just curious if i will notice the improvement to add more RAM since XP only really uses 3. is that extra gb a big help or just gravy?
i got my comp from a local pc guru. it was his 2 month old baby! _________________ the new rules : there are no rules |

If you are running a ton of softsynths/midi, it helps. If not, it's just gravy. _________________ Steve Stallings

Get yourself a copy of XP 64 bit - it can use "see" more ram than the 32 bit version.
Or get Vista and run at least 4 gigs of ram.
Perhaps a friend can lend you a copy of xp 64 so you can make sure all your favorite aps can work as expected before making the purchase? _________________ tear out your heart and make them wear it around their neck so they'll understand |
