Songs that sound like other songs

Post by Nate Dort » Sat May 17, 2008 10:11 am

Inspired by this thread... I started thinking about songs that I've heard that make me say "damn, that sounds just like xxxxxx."

Ex:
Hall & Oates - She's Gone (also wins award for best worst video ever)

now listen to the intro from 10CC - I'm Not In Love

OK, your turn.

One of the more blatant is The Lips' 'Fight Test' and Cat Stevens' 'Father & Son'. It's too bad, because it is a really beautiful song and that doesn't stop it from being a beautiful song - but to get paid for it isn't right.

Doesn't help that Wayne Coyne looks just like him, too.

Wilcos song called On and On off the new album Blue Sky Blue is almost a complete rip off of Spirits song Space Child.

And of course Bon Jovi's "Livin' on a Prayer" and Belinda Carlisle's "Heaven is a Place On Earth." Not so much staggeringly identical as much as they're remarkably similar harmonically and chordally. That'd be Desmond Child recycling himself to make a few extra million bucks.

Mutt Lange does the same thing.

Lovin' Every Minute Of It by Loverboy = Pour Some Sugar on Me by Def Leppard

Love Bites by Def Leppard = Still the One by Shania Twain (the pre chorus at least)

One Foot Back in Your Door by Roman Holiday's prechorus is verbatim recycled in Billy Ocean's Get Out Of My Dreams (Get Into My Car)

non mutt-isms:

Don't Worry Be Happy by Bobby McFerrin = What's Up by Four Non-Blondes

Shambala by BJ Stevenson as done by Three Dog Night = My Maria by BJ Stevenson

Girlfirend by Avril Lavigne = Nth Degree by Morningwood

"Let it Snow" and "Winter Wonderland". Sing one over the top of the other. Almost works entirely.

"fast car" and "jack and diane" have a very similar hook

"Breaking Us In Two" stole verse off another song that I hear all the time at the sto. Did he ever get sued for that one?
