Billy Dolan - 5ive Style - Guitar Tone

Post by joelmoore » Wed Jul 23, 2008 1:44 pm

Any advice on how to achieve something near the sound of the lead guitar on the 5ive Style albums?

Sounds also similar to the guitar on Track and Field's "200? NewToMe".

Thanks...

he played an sg into an old marshall plexi if that's any help.

fucking AMAZING guitar player. the first time i saw them they were opening for tortoise/sea and cake on the 'millions now living' tour. we had no idea who 5ive style were, they came out and played pretty much the whole first record and we were all standing there STUPIFIED. i was standing right in front of bill and Holy Shit. he just kicked out all this genius guitar playing in a totally offhand manner. like it was nothing. one of the very few times i've been totally and completely blown away by a band.

Thanks for the info. I was never lucky enough to see them live but I hear that tour talked about as the golden age of post-rock.

5ive Style is definitely some of the sweetest guitarwork ever.

+1 for Heroic Doses from me as well. Pure, creative, inspiring, bouncy spazzy rock music. Been meaning to give 5ive Style a listen for a while now.

The cassette bootleg my friend had made from the soundboard the first time we saw Heroic Doses is still a prized possession. Those dudes were SICK!

Funny, I was just thinking of starting a 5ive Style thread when I found this one!

I've only heard the CD with the spaceman on the cover (and Billy's Heroic Doses). Such great tunes and tones. BTW he was profiled in the December 1998 issue of Guitar Player.

I lived in Chicago from '90-'96 but unfortunately never even heard them 'til years later.

I saw Heroic Doses open up for I think Sunny Day Real Estate when I lived in Austin, that was a great show!

Hmmh..I know Euphone (heroic doses rhythm section) opened a bunch of shows on the Rising Tide tours because Nick Macri was playing bass for SDRE. I caught a couple of those shows which were absolutely awesome. Seemed like SDRE was in top form then too.

i remember a euphone show at the middle east where ryan rapsys put on one of the most ridiculous displays of drumming i've ever seen. normally i am a sworn enemy of gratuitous overplaying, but he did it in the most entertaining fashion, and he's a total sweetheart, so it was ok.

gave the heroic doses record a spin last night. still great. i wish bill dolan kicked out a record every year, we really need more of that guy...

I was obsessed with Dolan's tone for years. In fact, I recorded a tune that I think comes pretty close to it using an SG through an old Supro amp with some slapback echo.

Check it out "46X"-this is from 2002 (also never mastered this recording:)
