Re: Oktava MK-319 mic review
It sounds REALLY good when paired with an MK 012 (small diaphragm oktava) on acoustic guitar. The 319 brings out the dark midrange, while the 012 picks up more detail and high end. Used alone though, it sounds a little too honky for me.
On my vocals it sounds really good. I don't have many mics to compare it to, but if you're in my boat and can't afford expensive mics, it's good quality for low money.

Re: Oktava MK-319 mic review
i have a 319. i got mine before they were giving them away. so i've had it for like 3 or more years now. its my ownly personal LD mic.
in general i dont use it. i've found its extremely picky as to what preamp i plug it into, and who is in front of it.
i've never try'd it on drums in any form. so i couldnt say in that area. if i put it up. i put a small condenser next to it. [an even cheaper one, from radio shack, goo 8 years old? needs a battery and phatom power] and normaly go with the SD.
but i track mostly just around my apt. so the 319 picks up to much noise too.
[street, refrig, bad room reflexions, etc]
i think its good for its cost. weather its good is all relative. i like my 58 and radio shack mic, and i bounce to disk. soo..
the only mics i've ever shot it out with. was a neumann tlm 103, tlm 127, and a rode NTK. i liked it better then the NTK, but couldnt touch the neumanns imo.
[i ran the mics through a manley dual block pre. into Protools at 24/48
i could see if i had a studio space. a pair of 319's being fun as stereo room mics. [like the other side of the room].

I'm actually the one that is ruining recording. It was me all along. Sorry guys.
Re: Oktava MK-319 mic review
but can you get ONE for $49.99? Hmmm...
at 50 bucks a pop, even the best mic cabinet could make some room. you just never know when it might be the sound you are looking for
but what do I know? i starting to go back to the 58 for more and more stuff (including vocals!) all that's old is new again?

Re: Oktava MK-319 mic review
I've owned an MK-319 for over a year now and I've finally decided to sell it and get something a bit brighter and more open.
It's definitely not a crisp mic like some AT's and AKG's I've tried. It's smooth-sounding, but a little dull on some sources.
A good bang for the buck, but a few hundred more will get you something much, much better. Isn't that always the case?

Re: Oktava MK-319 mic review
I own 8 of them and 6 012's. If you want a matched pair that will last,,,learn to mod mics. These things rock for $100, get shockmounts, these are way oldschool mics. They are Russian, no two are alike unless you pay a guy to sit in a room and match them which cost money. You could figure out the electronics and put US military grade pieces instead of Russian pieces and voila, Your mic is twice the price. I used it on micing a Marshal, vocals, acoustic guitar, and general banging on stuff (drums room mic), sounded great.
A few of my local engineer buddies and I had a "mic off" with every cheapo mic we could find in our cases. Behringers, Samsons, Oktava, CAD, EV, Shure, and AKG's. The Oktava's won out hands down for better mids, cripy highs, and thick lows against all but the AKG's (which were flatter and a little quieter which translated into more musicality. Less harsh on top than Rode, not as smooth as the AKG, but, MILES away from the pack. I don't know how they will fare in time, but, my buddies are going to do it again this year against the BLUE mics, the m-Audio, and the pack will be back again too. Yes all the tests were through at least 2 mic pre's, 1 Focusrite and one Soundcraft all flat, no inserts.

Re: Oktava MK-319 mic review
It goes something like this:
Joe Startingout
"I own this Escort (MK319) and it's great I love it! It get's me to school, takes me out and about on the weekends, I drive it to church and I can even use it to lug around some heavy equipment. What a fantastic car!"
Joe Beenaroundawhile
"An Escort (MK319)! What an absolute peice of rubbish! Those cars are responsible for littering the freeways and letting too many people get around and figure out how to drive with others. No no no what you need is a Mercedes (Nuemann takeyourpick) those are real cars and unless you own one you should just stay home or ride a feckin' bike. Otherwise you run the risk of tainting the rest of us with your piss poor quality and ignorant self."
Kind of ridiculous innit. Who hasn't owned an Escort (cheap mic) or known someone who has that loved it to death and got them started so that they could figure out how to drive (record) better through practice and experience. Rather than being a hyper critical elitist that offers condescending remarks, how about serving the purpose of this forum and offer advice and tips that will serve to expand our collective knowledge and make us better at what we are trying to do.

Re: Oktava MK-319 mic review
That's Joe Beenaroundawhhhiiiiiiiiiiiile, and add Mr. to that buddy,
I started out with radioshack crap and went very quickly to Neumann's and the like and stayed there for many years. I've used a lot more neumanns than anything else by a long stretch (except the "57") and I'm tellin you for $59 at "banjoworld" you can't beat them and you can mod them and it makes a big difference to an already good mic. I own a shitload of them.
They need bigger caps, get Tantalum.

Re: Oktava MK-319 mic review
Do tell, where can I find a $59 Nuemann that's in good working order? I've been unsuccesful in finding Banjoworld listed on the internet.

Re: Oktava MK-319 mic review
Actually you did not say Oktava anywhere in your post, so keep your invectives to yourself and pay a little more attention to how phrase your words. Clearly I was calling you out on the blatant error in saying that you can get Nuemanns for $59. Let's leave it at that shall we.
