Reason #23487 why TapeOp is cooler than Gearslut

Hey Hey!

I've not spent nearly as much time on Gearslutz as I have here, where I rarely find the time to read and post as much as I wish, but in general I've found TOMB to be much more to my liking - more warm, down-to-earth, helpful, grounded - more about the music than the gear. I've certainly found useful info over at Gearslutz, but still find myself feeling more at home here.

In leading EARS Chicago, the question comes up often of whether we should create our own forum, the idea being that our community could be virtually extended beyond meetings with a place to meet online. It's not a bad idea, but each time we've considered it, we've come back to the same ideas that our world doesn't need another forum and if I want to ask a question, offer a tip, or just participate in discussion, why limit the size of my net to just Chicago? What meaning does that even have online? For that matter, I don't have enough time to participate as much as I wish I could here, let alone another forum!

But there IS always at least some element of it being helpful to find out who's doing something or has something locally around here, and as EARS is really only a certain slice of Chicago (much like TOMB is only a certain slice of the online audio/music community) it helps to have some way of knowing who our comrades are in these forums. So I've tried, though with not nearly the success I've hoped for, to ask our members to follow my lead by making their location list on the forums as "EARS Chicago", just so we could realize when we're bumping into each other here. themagicmanmdt is one of us and notes it, as does channelcat. I'm not sure if I've gotten anyone else to join us, though it seems like a simple enough idea.

For now, TOMB is certainly where I feel most connected, but who knows, someday there could be enough demand to launch our own site, if we do... my plan is to call it "EARslutz".

I don't really see a reason to trash other message boards. They all serve a distinct community. I find Gearslutz to be very helpful for certain things.

Ditto - they both serve a community, and I think they are complimentary, each serving what the other is lacking.

I just joined the Gibson forum and everyone there posts their guitar rig list. So I did too. It is what it is.

The worst, most pathethic bands in the world all use Gibson guitars. So you couldn't expect much more from their forum.

It's probably cos I like to peruse the Megaboard instead of trying to keep track of all the different fora. It takes 7 - 8 seconds to load easy. All the other forum links are actually fast (I just clicked them for the first time pretty much ever...)

And BTW, it's FF 3.5.8 on Snow Leopard.

If people would size their avatars appropriately, this problem would be reduced considerably.
