No photos, but I've built the 3rd wall with the doorway in the front. I've also acquired the roof joists, but have yet to cut them.
Brief update, more in due course. _________________ Making the world sound better, one room at a time |

Thanks for the poke. Progress has slowed down, but continued to move.
I have the roof joists in place, and all the materials to build the roof. I'll be building the roof on Monday. I was planning on posting pics after that. _________________ Making the world sound better, one room at a time |

Here's the latest photos as it stands now, with the last wall built and the roof joists sitting in place (but not yet fastened):
I have all the materials to build the roof, and a friend is coming out on Monday to help me knock it out. With luck, all I’ll have left after Monday is to skin the shed, build the door, and build shelves inside. Then I can move all the crap presently in the garage into the shed.
After that, next is to get electricity inside the garage, and start on the studio build proper. Ever closer! _________________ Making the world sound better, one room at a time |

update: much of the roof was done.... joists secured, plywood installed, flashing and drip edges installed. All that's left is getting the roll roofing finished.... another 3-4 hours of work. Pics soon. _________________ Making the world sound better, one room at a time |

Roof is pretty much done, just a bit of cosmetic buttoning-up left to do.
I'm on the road for 10 days or so, but I'll post pics when I return.
My goal at this point is to finish the shed, move all the crap into it, and have electricity inside the garage before winter hits. Then I can build out the studio over the winter. _________________ Making the world sound better, one room at a time |

Just a quick update.... still no photos. I've been on the road a lot this past month, so not much progress. This weekend I'll definitely work on things, with luck I'll have the exterior of the shed done, and photos. Watch this space.... _________________ Making the world sound better, one room at a time |

The storage shed is nearing completion. Roof is done (thanks Matthew!), most of the siding is up, only some trim remains. After I finish the trim, all that’s left is to build the door, and build the shelves inside the shed. Then I can move all the crap from the garage in and get electricity into the garage. My goal is to have this done before winter kicks in, so I can work on the actual studio itself over the winter.
Here are pics:
^^ Front view. Only half of the door is cut out, I still have to trim away much of the wood siding to expose the other half of the door.
^^ Corner view, with the longest dimension of siding visible.
^^An overall view. The shed is 8×16, the garage is 12×20. Yep. This will be a cozy studio, barely big enough to get a full band inside.
^^ Here’s the seam where the new siding meets the aged siding of the garage. As the shed ages, this should get closer to a match.
^^ Still plenty of trim work to do, including the soffits to cover the joists. _________________ Making the world sound better, one room at a time |

Still plugging away. Only one more piece of siding to install before the shed is completely closed-in (apart from the doors).
A friend of mine gave me a decent, old set of barn hinges. Trying to figure out how to use them, as they are a different type than what I'd planned on using.
Pics soon... _________________ Making the world sound better, one room at a time |

The shed is now almost completely enclosed. Here is the only portion still awaiting siding:
I also installed a trimboard between the existing garage and the new shed. Eventually these 2 wood tones will get closer as the new wood ages:
Here’s more of the trim work, getting all the angles right from the two pitched slopes is tricky:
And, here’s a full view of the shed as it is now:
Next step is to add that last piece of siding, do the trim at the rear of the shed. Then I can build the doors, and install the shelves. _________________ Making the world sound better, one room at a time |

Last piece of siding is in, and the shelves are done:
All that remains is to build the doors, the step, and then move the crap in. _________________ Making the world sound better, one room at a time |

Just realized I forgot to do an update here. The shed doors are on, I'm moved most of the stuff out of the garage and into the shed. Still have some more moving to do.... then I'll have a tabula rasa in the garage to actually begin the studio build proper. This of course means I need more budget, to begin with OSB, drywall, and acoustic caulk to "beef up" the outer structure.

Hi Carl,
Several factors have necessitated a slowing-down. Finances haven't been favorable for a build, and also we're contemplating moving house. I don't want build a great studio only to move away just as it's being completed.
On the other hand, I need a place to play music at least. I'm going to begin building a "quick and dirty" room within a room, and I'm only going to beef up the outer infrastructure between the studio and the house, and possibly the road. I'll still build the inner room with the same soundproofing plan (green glue, etc).
I'm going to do up the math on materials needed to get the framing work done right away, so I can move in. I'll then focus on treatments afterward.
I basically have a blank slate, a 12x20 garage on a (cracked) concrete slab. It will be a one-room setup when it's done. _________________ Making the world sound better, one room at a time |
