Hey, all. I've been toying with the idea of building a preamp (The Redd.47 to be specific) for quite some time now. If all goes well, I'd like to build an LA-2A and Pultec as well. I am a complete n00b, though. I've made guitar cables, installed pickups, and built a DIY envelope filter, but a project like this is bold new waters for me. I was wondering if someone could help me hunt down parts, and if anyone lived in the Philadelphia/Southern Jersey area that'd be willing to spend a day(s) with me helping and guiding me through. I'm very brave and won't be asking the same question a million times. I listen. I'd just hate to invest a huge chunk of cash and not have the project go anywhere.
Thanks,
-Andrew |

maybe try a kit if you dont feel up to the task of sourcing all the parts. seventh circle audio and hamptone are the first two that come to mind. there's a sticky on the DIY section of the forum on the various mic pre kits. if not... there is also the forum at http://www.prodigy-pro.com/diy/index.php they have a wealth of info _________________ Ok, who brought the dog? - Louis Tully

I'm not familiar with the Redd.47, but here's a source for a Pultec build that might interest you.
http://www.gyraf.dk/gy_pd/pultec/pultec.htm
I recently built their G9 preamp (love it!) and am currently building their G7 tube mic.
As far as parts sources, I've relied on Mouser and Digikey for most parts, and Newark for whatever the other two don't have. _________________ "TEMPUS FUGIT" the Novel -- Now Available!!

you should be able to do the ordering yourself. i built a jlm audio baby animal preamp. it comes as a kit (pcb and all parts) and then next built a gyraf pultec without any trouble.
the parts lists are online at gyraf's site, and valve units have very few parts. plus they are big and easy to solder. the only part i was worried about was wiring up a mains transformer for the first time. but it turned out fine. now my problem is building monitors/speakers that'll do justice to the bass! |
