anyone from portland?
anyone from portland?
my girlfriend and i are going to be going through portland oregon in june as part of a road trip. can anyone recommend decent record shops, 2nd hand music/guitar shops, and good/kinda cheap places to eat/drink, and places to avoid, etc???? thank you!!!!
Re: anyone from portland?
this can go on forever, but let me start with place to drink. henry ford's.

Re: anyone from portland?
lets see, another recomendation is to get some food from a food cart, and eat it on the steps of pioneer courthouse square, which is one of the best public urban spaces in the country. on a nice day there should be music at lunch time, and plenty of people throughout the day.
food carts:

also a good place to sip on a coffee drink. coffee shops can be found with alarming frequency in portland.
oh, and if you cant find a good food cart (they are all over), try good dog bad dog, a sausage place about a block or so off the square.

Eeldip,
I regret to inform you that Henry Ford's has closed its doors. Sucks, eh? That place was the coolest. I wonder where Lyle Chaffee will go?

Re: anyone from portland?
if you like gardens, the garden "tour" is really good.
chinese gardens, to japanese gardens, to rose gardens. all in a day. all connected by the max (well a little hike from the zoo stop to the japanese and rose gardens...) but the MAX stop at the zoo is the deepest subway stop in north america, it is also the cleanest, and one of the coolest (it has a core sample of the mountain along with a prehistory/history timeline)

Re: anyone from portland?
thanks for all the tips!
to answer eeldip, as for food, anything spicy, esp. thai or indian, but also sushi and anyplace with decent breakfast food. but then my girlfriend is a fish-eating vegetarian, so i have to take that into consideration. as for bars, anything *not* a sports bar or sleazy-guys-in-suits-after-work place. something dive-y where i won't get my ass kicked always works.
but also, i know there's a buttload of decent used record shops in portland, and can anyone narrow it down to the few that are most worth visiting? don't worry, i'm not gonna buy up all the shit! i'm too poor!
nature is also good! what places in the vicinity are good for hiking? or just wandering aimlessly?

nature:
(30-45 min drive) eagle creek trail. upriver on I-84. i forget the exit, but it is a famous trail. i would go in as far as possible. popular, so go early, and go in far...
http://www.waterfallswest.com/or_eagle.html
this is a more secret area. very high up from portland. about a 2 hour drive door to door, even though it is not "far" as the crow flies. if you have never seen a glacier before this will blow you away.

mt. st. helens is awesome as well.

Re: anyone from portland?
hey eeldip, is the india grill still going, the one on burnside out at, maybe, 30th or so? across the street from the market and the hot dog stand. if it is, that place rocks....
Re: anyone from portland?
well, i am in SF right now. and so far i have recomended one place that is closed... so...
i would hesitate to comment about that place.
indeed good indian food. cool location (in a house). and great hot dog stand across the street. great beer serving theater a block down, great rock star karaoke over at chopsticks (well, NW rockstars sing there).

interesting... yeah, there's a kick-ass indian chaat place in berkeley where i live called vik's where the staff is, to put it politely, a bit abrupt. but it kinda adds to the overall soup nazi atmosphere of the place.
