Mic Review: Microtech Geffel M990

Post by CDSager » Thu Dec 04, 2003 1:50 pm

This MT gmbh M990 is a medium sized diaphram tube mic. This is one of the most professional sounding mics that I have ever used. It seems to impart a shining gleam on anything that you put it on. Sounds like it has a bump down around 300 and also up around maybe 7K.

I have consistently put this mic up against a U67, and it almost always sounds better.

I have used it on bass (sounds really full and present), acoustic guitars (sounds like instant grammy winning ac), electric guitars (sounded smoove and beautiful) and most importantly, vocals. This is the most professional sounding vocal mic. It gives a certain air and presense to the vox track, and always seems to really flatter the voice. this mic thru a 6176 makes me weep.

the 990 can be a little touchy when it comes to realy loud instruments, but i woulndt want to throw in front of a kik anyway (my C3 does just fine)

my only complaint would be that the multi pin cable is impossible. plan for at least 10 minutes of fighting to get this damn thing to lock into the mic and power supply. damn germans.

i would wholeheartedly recomment the m990 for most professional applications. try it. you will like it.

(the 296 omnis sound good too!)

Thanks for the review

Gefell mics, in general, are just amazing. My UMT70s is awesome.

gefell makes some really great sounding mics. i picked up a umt70s a couple weeks ago and i'm very impressed w its clarity and versatility, not to mention hi build quality. after using the umt70s i'm really interested in trying out more gefell models like the m990, great stuff.

dave, i don't know but i'd guess that they have one. the fet mics are marketed as transformerless to such a degree that if the tube mics were also transformerless i think they'd mention it. but maybe they prefer to be hush hush to a 'tube' consumer, who would also presumably want a transormer, but who knows. seems like the builders who are using tubes w/o transformers these days are making a big deal out of being transfomerless.. in the end, i don't know but i'd guess that they do or they'd be cheaper. just a guess.

I would just call up the mic tech at their Canadian (which is also their U.S.) distributor and ask:
