A spoken word set to music kindof thing I did (3 min)

Post by Snarl 12/8 » Tue Aug 08, 2023 11:37 pm

I've realized I'm an experimental funk musician/recordist and it's been freeing...

Thank you so much NIck. Just for listening even. But.

I'm curious if there's anything you would do differently with the mix. I spent many, many hours mixing and remixing it. I probably printed 10 different mixes. I was really enjoying it and learning a lot, but I'm still curious if you have any tips. I mixed it in my inadequately treated basement, which is what I mostly blame for how long it took.

Just in case you or anyone is interested. It is only 8 tracks of instruments, 4 for drums, tamborine, bass and two guitar tracks, one dry (I think DI) and one of the moogerfooger. And 3 vocal tracks. Each track is a continuous first or second take, so there are lots of imperfections. In the end the method that I used for the "final" mix was I put all the faders up until all the tracks were roughly equal and then I subtracted any sounds that felt too loud with EQ only. I wound up rolling off a lot of highs off almost everything except the lead vox. LCR mix (as I understand it) only Kick, bass and lead vox are up the middle.

Well, send the multi track over, I can spend some time on it this week... see if I can imagine it differently.

What is it that bothers you / annoys you / you don't like about your mix version?

Not sure if I can make it better, but maybe a different take on the production can get you thinking differently...

Cheers.

What an amazingly kind offer. Unfortunately, i am away from my setup and the tracks are stuck in my hd24xr anyway. I guess i am tired of people saying they cant hear the lead vocal when i couldnt really make a "vocal forward" mix work for me. I did 9 mixes with the vocal out front and didnt like any of them. I think "translation" is what im really after while still rewarding people with decent listening setups.

I am such an amateur (and so fried from my trip seeing my dad through spine surgery) that it took me a couple hours to realize what I was turning down. My daughter thinks I'm crazy. I will have the files up here by tomorrow if I can figure out the HD24 file transfer and if overnight is a reasonable timeframe for the download to my computer. (I've heard it is very slow.)

I should be able to work a bit on this starting Wednesday / Thursday... so take your time with that transfer.

Cheers.

It worked pretty fast! You can't believe everything you read on the internet. I guess if time was money to would be a bummer.

http://www.snarlnet.com/EverybodyKnowsThatFiles.zip

It's almost half a gig of 24/96. I am almost positive you will consider the tracks over-recorded. One of them clips ffs. I started with red VU meter analog and then cut my digital teeth on 16/44 where every bit counted. I can't drive 55 when it comes to level, essentially.

Half a gig will take a while to suck out of my basement server. I should know what my upload speed is.

Obviously, no pressure. If you aren't having fun, you just gotta run. Please don't use that 12th track.

I'm also going to say right here that people can do whatever they want with these tracks with or without attribution to

"Please don't use that 12th track"

Oh, don't tempt me...

Went ahead and downloaded them. Will see them Wednesday or Thursday, according to when I'm done here with a current project.

Cheers.

I liked your mix ok... did not mind the distortions.

These days, almost all converters are 24 bit, so you don't ever need to go up to even the yellow, and get fantastic resolution. Glad the days of 16 bits is over for the most part. Imagine when they make CDs have a comeback... oh the horror.

I have lost all perspective after 9-10 more printed mixes. Hours of remixing.

But is this a better mix?

LOL

I'll listen to this new mix tomorrow. My only "gripe" is the DI guitar. I do love some of the long squealy things when it first comes in and later on... the one with the effect is cool.

I'll try to send you a mix version tomorrow at some point.

The song seems busy, and I absolutely love what the drums and bass do together. So we'll see what happens.

Yeah. This latest round of mixes i have left out the dry DI guitar completely and brought the tambourine way down. I ran the DI guitar through the moogerfooger in an attempt to make something useful out of it in the first place. Feel free to mute anything that offends you.

I still love the instrumental version...

I think I like this:

--- (if you need the link again Snarl, let me know)---

While I got rid of a bunch of vocals, I think this now kind of makes a point of some sort.

Let me know what you think.Especially if there are any vocals you'd want to replace where you do speak, maybe other phrases.

Yeah, that old guitar that you did... no. Not good. Interesting ideas here and there but... was not meant to be in there at all in the end. And, well, the tambourine was scrapped. The drums are wonderful as is. Busy, frantic. Messed up.
