who the fuck gives a shit about the future of recording if there isnt anything worth while to record... Show me a band that is 1/4 the talent of led zeppelin or the rolling stones or the beatles and then we can wax on the future of the medium. Personally, when I listen to music for fun, Im listening to shit that was recorded when a transistor was a new and exciting idea. Not because I like the sound of tube equipment or anything like that, but because the bands that were doing the stuff I find interesting were doing it then. The idea of wondering about 5.1 mixes for rock music seems so bizarre to me when we no longer have bands that dont benefit from having their drummer's mistakes edited to hell in some computer program.
The future of music recording is pretty damned irrelevant if nobody is going to be concerned with the future of performance. One cant really exist on a vital level without the other. Until then, lets all learn to love limp bizkit.

I think the thing that is missing is soul and soul music. really though, look what both zepplin (blues) and the stones (soul/motown) got to draw off of!
look what we have to draw off of now (house music anyone?) _________________ boobs are life's fountain |

Guys, I honestly don't know what you are talking about. There were lots of good bands back in the day, and there was also a lot of crap. Today, proportionally there's even more crap but also some really awesome bands. I saw someone on another thread lamenting the lack of good rock bands today. Now, you and I may well have different taste, but for my $$ here are a few bands that rock as hard as a Zeppelin or Sabbath did back in the day. Of course, none of these will be as influential because none of them have the market share, and because there's 30 years give or take of intervening rock history:
Houston
Shiner (defunct, alas -- too mathy for some but I love 'em)
And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead (a rock and roll name, nu?)
Year of the Rabbit (sounds a lot like Failure, whose Fantastic Planet sounds amazing and was done on ADATs, so there)
Aereogramme
Queens of the Stone Age/Kyuss
some of these guys are even on major labels. Go figure.
As for electronica, sure, there's tons of boring stuff, but there's also some brilliant and amazing stuff -- Amon Tobin, Massive Attack, Senor Coconut, Lamb, etc. etc.
The future of music is in the musicians, and as Vernon Reid once said, there are millions of people in their basements waiting to blow your mind.
Best,
