T.O.M.B. Rankings? I Say, L.A.M.E-O! OR, is it just me?
RE: T.O.M.B. "Rankings"
Is it just me? Or is the T.O.M.B. "Rankings" by far the lamest thing about the whole Tape Op Message Board?
(You know, that inexplicable line of text, just below your User Name, when you post to the Board?)
I'm a LONG time reader of the Magazine, but I only recently joined TOMB...
And, ya know, I've been doing recordings of my own, and other's, music for 34 years, now... And, I never went to Audio School (Not that there's anything wrong with that. No.), but according to my postings on The Board, I'm an Audio School Graduate, now... WTF?
School Of Funky Cables...!? School Of Sticky Tape and Rust?
I know, Hillery says that, "All Message Boards do some sort of Ranking system..." or something to that effect.
So...?
To paraphrase my late Mother, "If ALL the other Message Boards jumped off the bridge, does that mean that you should, too?"
NO, you shouldn't! (Hillery!)
I'm sure you must have a vested interest in this system... what with just the sheer number of levels that you've created. But, really? "Re-capin' Neve"... WTF? How many of these dudes (and Dudettes) have ever even SEEN a Neve, let alone re-capped one. or even know what that MEANS!!!?
And, "Ass Engineer"... Really? "Ass Engineer"?
And, there must be dozens of different levels!!! WHY? To what end?
Is there a "Shooting Phil Spector" rank? Why not?
"Please, Sir, I'd like to rape Roman Polanski!"
It all just seems to me to be WAY beneath the level of the Magazine, or is it just me?
I've had a computer since I got an ATARI ST, in 1987, to do MIDI, and I got my first PC, to run Digidesign's SESSION Software DAW at home, in 1995... and, this is the first "Board" that I've ever even felt the desire to Post to... So, what do I know about Message Boards?
Well, I've been producing my own original music for more than 35 years, now,
and I'm pretty sure that I know somethin' lame-o, when I see it.
Why don't we just "re-take" that TOMB Rankings-thing...?
Why not just let people add their own Label, or you could simply skip it, altogether! Good riddance!
Don't get me wrong, I TOTALLY LOVE THE MAGAZINE, but I kinda Hate The TOMB Rankings!
What do you say, all you "Ass Engineers" out there? Lady Hillery? Sir Larry? Diesel John? Geek Andy? Master Garrett?
Hey, sorry, just my two cents. (FREE in the U.S.!)

PS, I love the Behind The Gear section, BTW! It's often the first thing I turn to, when my new issue arrives...
BUT, I find that it's often WAY TOO SHORT!!! Only </= 2 pages?
WTF? They're just gettin' goin', and it ends!
WTF? Ask 'em some more questions!!!
(Sell 'em an Ad, and add another 4 pages!)
Still, great stuff, Tape Op gang, as usual! THANKS!!!
BTW, I LOVE the new matte paper, too!!! Wow! Sweet! Smoove!

And, you're doing "mixes from purgatory"...? Really?subatomic pieces wrote:It's just you.
Even considering that Oklahoma might actually BE Purgatory, it's still a lame concept.
It might even be a case of "creative, for creative's sake", which is never good.
What the Purgatory?

The only people who ever even notice are the people who just signed up, who are embarrassed by their low rank. The rest of us use a combination of your post count, the quality of those posts, and whether or not you're known for your work, to determine if your advice can be trusted.
I would've never noticed my current rank if you hadn't pointed it out. And, I still don't care.
BTW, your crack about Oklahoma is waaaay more lame than the goofy rankings. Bad form.

That's what you took from my post?
And, you never noticed? Really? What's with that?
I notice a LOT of things.
I guess I shouldn't have even asked.

I'm only posting this response so I'll get to my next rank sooner. Pushin' record sucks.
Hopefully I'll finally start to get taken seriously around here, unlike this newbie:

I can only dream that one day I'll be promoted to "pushin' record".Mudcloth wrote:I'm only posting this response so I'll get to my next rank sooner. Pushin' record sucks.

No, it isn't just you. There have been other threads started by people who were just as offended by rankings (specifically 'ass engineer') as you are. In general, the response is the same as you've seen here: loosen up, it's just a bit of fun. Silly for silly's sake.PretendMusic wrote: Is it just me? Or is the T.O.M.B. I used to have a guy who worked for me doing web design. He was my "web assistant." We both used to get a kick out of writing "web ass" on his time sheets.
This is the kind of thing that's never going to make everyone happy, so the web developers might as well just do whatever makes them laugh. This board, like the magazine is free, maybe seeing "web ass" under people's names makes Hillary smile every time she sees it, seems fair to me.

We had one assistant producer who got a big kick out of being called the "ass prod," and another who just got completely bent out of shape about it. Ultimately some people are more uptight about that stuff than others.
