| All depends on what you're trying to achieve, of course. When I'm doing post-production (for documentary type stuff) I'll often want to maintain a consistently hot level, but not be slamming compressors to death. In fact, I usually don't want to hear the compressors working at all. My workaround is to use compressors in series on the individual tracks, followed by subtle buss compression, and I've had a lot of success with this method. For music it's a different story, and often I'll want the sound of squashing something to death through a particular compressor. |

Must be the IO plugin which routes audio to Hardware processors . Well, i can name few; FLUX Solera, Epure and SoundToys -plugins. _________________ ♫ Mac Pro 8-Core | OSX 10.6.2 | Logic 9.1 | RME FF800 | Eventide | Flux | Sound Toys | D16 | ♫

URS A-Series EQ
Digi 1 + 7 band EQs
Massey 3-band EQ
Massey CT-4 Compressor
Massey L2007 Limiter
Massey Tapehead
Massey TD5 Delay
TL Space Reverb
Digi Expander
Digi Short Delay (for room mics)
That's basically all I ever use, and usually they get the job done. I don't have much in the way of plugins. _________________ Ryan Slowey

Saturation: still waiting for the right one. Redline preamp sounds great but I'm waiting to try Slate's VCC and Soundtoys Juice before I purchase. Mellowmuse has one being released this weekend as well that I'll try out. Decapitator sounded awesome but it was just too obvious for the way I like to use saturation. |
You should really give the URS Saturation plug a shot if you want something subtle but effective. It's kind of a pain to demo, whereas you have to acquire a temporary ilok license, but trust me, it's well worth it. |
I gave that a try but it didn't really float my boat; I prefer the Redline to it in that it "softens" sounds really well and pushes everything back from the speakers a bit without really hearing any distortion. I have the highest hopes for the Soundtoys plugin based on their work to date; Slate VCC sounds like it could be cool but they announced it close to a year ago and it hasn't materialized yet; starting to smell a bit like vapour-ware... |

I find the Rough Rider an excellent character comp but I cannot save my settings as presets and have to do a screen grab and use that to fudge it. Can you save your settings? _________________ MIDI THRU "It's the sound of 2010" |

I really like the Sonnox plug-ins, especially the Oxford EQ (great filters). SoundToys EchoBoy is pretty essential, as well. And Auto-Tune. Used correctly, Auto-Tune can be a lifesaver. Say you've got a great performance but a few notes fall a little flat, you can edit those flaws in graphical mode and it's not audible. I'd never stick on a track as an insert.
I'd like to try the Stillwell Major Tom because I'm a big DBX 160 fan on a lot of things like kick, snare, bass, mandolin, and banjo. Hopefully it captures it's compression characteristics...I don't care if it's "cleaner" or whatevah _________________ I'm rockin' and rollin' with my rock 'n' roll rock 'n' roller. |

The Major Tom is a great compressor plugin! Really easy to overuse it, but it's great for 1-5dB's or so. The UAD VCA plugin is a bit more controlled and snappier, so I tend to prefer it to the Stillwell plug. _________________ ~~~~~~~~

i used to think that i couldn't save settings in Eos either, but it seems to work fine.
I can't actually save a preset (to my knowledge) but it will save my settings from session to session. |

By far I use the Massey CT-4 the most, second only to the soundtoys stuff like the echoboy.
I have been using the Elysia Mpressor plugin lately, along with the free niveau filter they made available, which is the EQ built into the mpressor. its really killer.
I use the waves renEQ quite a bit for a simple little notch or shelf eq or high pass ITB before coming out into my analog chain.
I will use a few Waves thingies, though I dont like the company very much, I like some of the plugins enough to put up with it. _________________ http://joelhamiltonrecording.com/

What do you find the CT-4 works best on?
I have the demo, and I tried it and liked it, but since I can't save settings I don't use it too much. _________________ Music?

I use it on everything. Like, I never think about whether or not it will work. It's the only plugin comp I use. It doesn't do over-the-top stuff really, but for a little dynamic control, it works on just about everything. Compression artifacts seem virtually non-existant, even at more extreme amounts of GR.
I used mine for like a year as a demo. Just type the settings into that little note box under the faders in your DAW (assuming it has those) and reset them when you open the session. I've since purchased it, but still use all his other stuff that way. _________________ Ryan Slowey

All the Abbey Road plugs
The Bootsy FerricTDS is permanently on my 2-track
There's always an aux set up to Altiverb
I usually throw up the native simple delay in Ableton if I need delay
(I also like the reverb in "economy" mode a lot for some reason)
