there have been some gems over the years, but yeah, i think this one takes it.tonewoods wrote:....best...TapeOp...article...ever...
the bit about the IRS raiding willie's place and how bob responded....as the much-missed soundguy used to write around here: THE BALLS.
Very informative. Loved this article. I love the little stories you hear about the artists, and the session it's just cool to imagine being there. Bob Johnston seems like he'd be a cool guy to hang around. It reminded me of the book "A Catcher in the Rye" where Holden says he knows a book is good when he feels like he wants to hang out with the author when he's done reading it. Great job.
Be well, do good work, and keep in touch.

Hell yeah. I know an article/interview is good when I want to make other people read it. Bob Johnston is a badass. The stuff about working with Johnny Cash was great and his accounts of how lame the people in charge of record labels can be (particularly CBS) is stuff every musician should be aware of. I'm glad there's so many more ways for musicians to operate independently or at least semi-independently these days. It's too bad that great artists like Cash and Dylan had to deal with that crap. Would love to hear the stuff they did together that CBS won't release. Bob's right - you know that shit would go platinum. How can people in charge be so out of touch?
