Mackie Onyx 1640 as mixer controller? please advise.

Post by epidemic44 » Sat Dec 04, 2010 1:13 am

I recently added a Frontier Tango 24 8 channel a/d d/a to my digi 002r setup. The thing is, I am not able to afford a monitor controller at this time and I need some way to control on/off and levels of the monitors coming out of the d/a. Would there be a major degradation in sound or any reason not to use 2 channels on my mackie onyx 1640 mixer to control the monitors?

thanks in advance.

setup is:
Macbook Pro 2.4GHZ 4Gb Ram
Digi 002r (Pro Tools 8)
Tango 24
Jbl 7510a Mic Pres
Fmr RNC
Crown D-75a power amp pushing KRK ST-6's

no it wouldn't.

monitor controllers exist because the daw world has gone away from mixing desks... you've got a mixing desk, it IS a monitor controller, in every way shape and form.

main outs... control room outs... there right there begging to be hooked up and used.

I suppose you are right. Sometimes I get so wrapped up in the digital world, I forget about the things that have worked great for decades.

Thanks.
