magical sharp/flat vocal moments.

Post by lefthanddoes » Tue Nov 30, 2010 11:07 am

This is a thread for your favorite off-key moments in songs, where they would have been ruined if they had used Autotune.

First example I can think of is Gypsy by Fleetwood Mac in the third verse: "And a memory's all that's left for you now." The word "memory" is ust a little bit flat and just puts a peak on the sad/nostalgic feeling of the song.

Please to not turn this into a discussion on the ethics of Autotune.

One that pops into my head is "Traineater" off the Book of Knots album. Really, that song has "tuning problems" all over it in the music as well as the vocal, but it is BEAUTIFUL. The vocal performance is full of rich bendy stuff, slightly dissonant notes, and all kinds of movement that would likely be hurt with tuning. But in most spots the intonation is excellent, so we're really just talking about an amazing musician here.

I also tend to notice this more in ladies' vocals.

PS I do miss my days in Lower Allston/Brighton and the multitude of basements in that earthquake-free land.

The last guitar note on Jefferson Airplane's "Somebody to Love" is godawful out, and somehow at this point I wouldn't have it any other way.

I haven't listened to Iron Maiden in ages but there are a few spots in various songs where Bruce Dickenson is flat and it really adds to the performance.

The line "In the name of God my father I fly!" from 'Flight of Icarus' id the first one that pops into my head because he just belts it out with such power.

You know, since this widespread pitch-corrected bullshit seems to have hit across every genre, I love when I hear little off-key spots in music now days.

Ha! Growing up in NH we had one, I knew they happened if rare, but that's just weird timing.

Yeah, that's a good one.

That octave bass part in the instrumental section (guitar solo) of "Get Back" is a favorite of mine. It's so slightly sharp, it almost hurts.

Of course, that's not vocal...

The guitar intro on Chain of Fools. Totally out of tune but still great.

pretty much anything by Dead Moon- guitars and vocals. Now that Fred Cole is functionally deaf, it's even worse on the new records by Pierced Arrows. I liked it in Dead Moon, but now I find it distracting.
