Looked up this company (again) after watching a live Tangerine Dream video:
Creamware..now Sonic Core:

VDAT DSP Plug-In (bottom pf page):
http://sonic-core.net/joomla.soniccore/ ... 28&lang=us
"VDAT is the virtual counterpart to ADAT. It runs in wordclock-precise sync to your external recorders and can also be remote-controlled via an Alesis BRC. VDAT offers you 64 hard-disk-based tracks and supports 32-bit / 96 kHz recording. You can use the powerful VRC-128 to control your VDAT / ADAT setup comfortably and with an optimal overview."
Now, why can't we have a (Linux?) Live CD based on something like this. Imagine a Guitar Rig like virtual ADAT clone, instead of that Ardour deal.
When you drop the disc in almost ANY computer, it can take over and utilize many different audio interfaces and an ADAT BRC controller. It would run fullscreen only, no "editing" interface..STRICT hardware emulation.
If you want Pro Tools and Cubase go buy them etc...
The onscreen "ADAT" could even have many extra tracks with clever implementation. But it would stick to the main idea.
Hell, throw in switchable "tape emulation" on all the channels.
You would be able to click with mouse to set options and use keyboard to control the "machine" if you didn't have a BRC.
Is there anything out there like this? I haven't looked lately.
I mean, don't call it an ADAT, just have it use the BRC controller anyway.
But it has to fake a standalone unit. Like a simpler RADAR for the masses.
Another idea for a company wishing to develop this:
Lock it to a hardware audio interface if you must to kill piracy (skip Linux but keep the Live CD idea? NO DONGLES). Like a 24+ channel one rackspace unit. It MUST have 24 1/4" balanced analog i/o jacks on back. Have ADAT lightpipe too and whatever else is needed. Decent converters.
Make it cost $500 max.
A person can then throw it in a backpack with a laptop, BRC and the disc. Portable.
Take it to ANY PC with minimum specs and drop in disc....BAM up and working.
Computer dies? Drag in another one and keep going.
Make sure it can record the audio files to an external USB hard drive.
No effects as such. No plugins. No confusing virtual internal routing. NO STARING AT WAVEFORMS ON A SCREEN.
Just like an ADAT. Just hit record.
Pop out the disc and reboot with your USB hard drive still attached. Use Pro Tools, Cubase etc. to edit away on the files. Save the staring at waveforms for later after the CREATING is done.
Virtual ADAT...recording machine etc...

Like the Tascam X-48...but better
Just like the Tascam X-48
http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/X48/
But in software. Just the front panel....NO WAVEFORM VIEW. Only meters on screen. Just a drop down menu to setup the audio interface. Fire it up and GO.
And no $5000 price tag.
This should be child's play. I emailed the guys at Reaper. All they need is an interface for their existing code.
When you are done tracking, let your buddy fire up Reaper, Cubase, whatever and tweak for countless hours.
Forget the old broken cassette, ADAT and reel to reel mechanical monstrosities.
