It's studio building season in Brooklyn.
I haven't made much noise here about The Bunker's new space, but we've finally started laying out the rooms, so now that some shit is ACTUALLY happening, I am gonna start posting regular updates.
Anyway, we found an insane space a few months ago... 3000 sq ft, with 2000 of them in a free standing factory with 30 ft vaulted ceilings and 1000 of them in the 16 ft tall first floor of a 5 story factory. We hired Rod Gervais to design it, as a build out and design on this level is way way way beyond our capability. Rod came up with an absolutely awesome design, based on our love of classic studios from the 70's, and what we have ended up with for the A room is sort of a hybrid between the A and C rooms at Avatar (Power Station). The B room is a smaller 2 room affair that will have a lot of the vibe of the current Bunker, but in the context of a proper build out.
The last month and a half has been devoted to working out the design, getting all the permits and teams in order, and cleaning out nearly 100 years of bad decisions, compromises, and cheapness from the space. Just so you know, 100 years of that equals about 70 cubic yards worth of dumpsters...
After a few days of final demolition, cleaning, and black lung, today our lead carpenter, Gary Everett, and I started laying out the studio, and today we did the B room, as a warm up...
Tomorrow the first shipment of lumber arrives, and we're going organize it all, get everything where we need it, and start cutting and laying the plates... then Tuesday A.M. the framing crew arrives and frames B while Gary and I lay out the bathrooms, lounge, and A.
Crazy. I never thought I would build in such a 'legit' manner... I'm used to just eyeballing where I think a booth should be, and then just doing it, without plans... this is a different world, but this space deserves to be done right!

we have finished framing the entire B live room, including the ceiling, and have to do the angled ceiling in the control room next, followed by the two side walls... front and back walls went up today.
been going really smoothly. we have a solid crew, and they are very precise without bogging down in details.... crucial.
i forgot my camera today, so tomorrow i'll update with pictures of the completely framed B room.
over the weekend i'm going to frame out the hallway, and then next week we start laying out and framing A!!!

it's amazing to see this finally happening!
john and gary and crew have been working their asses off and the framing is just beautiful. rod's designs and engineering knowledge means that everything is being built super solidly.
rod figured out a way to get the ceiling in the A room up to 21ft which is going to be insane.
can't wait to get out of the studio next week and start helping with the build... _________________ Aaron Nevezie

thanks man! it's been crazy... we've been working super hard trying to frame as fast as possible without sacrificing the quality of the work. we're super lucky to have some great carpenters helping us out, and everyone involved is working efficiently as a team.
hoping to have the A control room up in the next 2 days... we'll see how that goes. and possible get a few walls of the string room up, or at the very least get all the studs cut so when we have to full team (tomorrow is just me, aaron, and jacob) we can get the walls stood up and braced.
it's really insane to be doing this... for the last 10 years we've just been working in whatever space, and then modifying our current space from loft into studio, and making it work... but building from scratch feels crazy. i never thought i'd build a proper studio from the ground up. and a big part of affording that is why we're moving so fast. we have to!
