I couldnt find much info on building dynamic mics. Mostly plans for sub kicks and electrets.
I am looking for schematics and some transducer suppliers.
Any ideas?
Thanks!!! |

| They're definitely out there...don't have any direct links for you but isn't a sub kick mic just a speaker wired backwards? |

Sure is. But I was looking for suggestions on other aspects of dynamic micssuch as transformers to use etc.
Maybe it's too easy - wire a capsule to a step-up transformer then to XLR.....
is it that easy? |

Personally, I wouldn't consider that DIY. Wind your own voice coil, attach it to a diaphragm so it can move in relationship to a magnet, and now we're talking. Better yet, wind the transformer too-- but that's for extra credit. The one thing you left out was the enclosure, and the openings needed to create the pickup pattern, unless you want omni. _________________ my new record:

By that standard almost nobody is building DIY condensor mics either, since the capsule is kind of important!
There are people building ribbon mics, which are technically dynamic mics. |

True, on all counts.
almost nobody is building DIY condensor mics
What most people do is DIY assembly, not building, or at least something in-between. Still a worthy accomplishment, but not to be put in the same category as making the capsule. Now that's impressive! (That's not to say that making the housing and doing the circuitry, etc. isn't impressive-- it is, and I have a lot of respect for what you do... it's just that making capsules is on a whole other level).

I was one, for a while. I'd love to get back to that, if I could find the time. I made a bunch of motors for phase II of the ubertar ribbon mic, but they've just been sitting around waiting to be completed into mics. Ribbon mics are the easiest kind to do from scratch... nowhere near on the level of making a condensor capsule. _________________ my new record:

10 or 12 years ago I made some ribbon mics...smallish horseshoe magnets with a tiny sliver of foil in the gap, with a sugarcube transformer for coupling. They worked, but not well enough to turn into a buttoned up package.
The mechanical construction was pretty precarious - I only had hand tools at the time.
With modern neodymium magnets, and all of the sources of information & parts on the internet, it's probably easier now. I've got sketches of a ribbon motor that could be machined from delrin if & when I find the time again. _________________ "What fer?"

DaveS....what is your skill level? That's an important question to ask out of the gate. I learned tons from taking apart old dynamic mics. Pretty easy actually. Ribbon mic fab is fun too. You can even use ribbon assemblies made for speaker tweeter use coupled to a tranny. You can use very small tweeters with a trannt for dynamics. But yes...porting and chassis build outs are the hardest thing by far when figuring directionality. My definition of DIY is literally do it yourself...meaning...assemble it yourself....as in....don't make Shure assemble it for you. No matter what anyone tells you...that is DIY at it's finest. Anything else is called a scratch build....which yes...almost no one does because they cannot. A friend of mine had a "mic" that was a headphone speaker duct taped to the inside of a plastic cup. The 1/8" went to 1/4" then to a practice amp. It sounded like crap but in a kind of cool way.
Is that a DIY dynamic mic?
I know it's not, I'm just kidding. Reading this thread reminded me of ol' "Cup Mic." _________________ Be well, do good work, and keep in touch. |

In a way it IS kind of a grassroots, home brew, ghetto fabulous version of DIY....yes! Anything that sparks creativity...necessity is the mother of invention! _________________ Working on music with Pete from Porno for Pyros... |

You can certainly design dynamic mics. They are typically more complicated than either condensers or ribbons. Many communicating chambers are usually required.
A machine shop and electroacoustics knowledge would be helpful!
If you just want capsules then search alibaba. Plenty out there but perhaps not in small quantities.
Just have a look at the humble Shure SM57 design. Not trivial. four chambers.

Some of Alpha Wiggins variable d designs were far more complicated!

I once got a broken Jecklin (not the electrostat version) pair of headphones and put the working capsule (nearly 2 inches diameter!)in a soapbox with some holes and a XLR connector. Made everything sound boooooom - it was the only thing you could put in front of a Marshall valvestate that made it remotely sound like an amp. That mic was used for years and years on stage and now & then gets out for a subkick-kinda thing.
I once even sang a whole track with it. |
