"What Is Mastering?" article

Post by kingtoad » Wed Feb 22, 2012 7:34 am

Hi all,

I have had this article on my website for a while now but I just updated it a little and wanted to see what some fellow engineers thought of it.

Please note that this article is aimed primarily at musicians and less experienced engineers who are reading it wanting to know the answer to the question it poses. A lot of stuff is not gone into in the depth it could be but that is deliberate as my intention was to create something engaging and informative for the neophyte.

Here is the link:

Hippocratic Mastering | What Is Mastering?

Thanks, and please let me know if I have broken any rules by posting this here. Couldn't see anything pertaining to this in the Forum Guidelines but I may have missed something!

(also, apologies for the phrasing of this being nearly identical to a similar post on the Gearslutz mastering forum. Didn't really feel anything needed to change though).

Looks like you covered all basses that a musician or potential client would ask you. Great Job!

Thanks guys, you all seem to like it a lot more than the residents of the Gearslutz mastering board, anyhow. Quelle Surprise.

Well written and about as broad as I have ever heard it put.

+1 on this:
"but knowing the 5% of the time not to use it is just as important."

To me, knowing what NOT to do is just as important as knowing what TO do. I think that drives efficiency.
