Ok, I have this weird little deal that I do all the time.... whether I'm just listening to music or recording it or mixing it..... I touch the biggest speaker I see. I feel how hard it kicks my fingers and partly judge the low end that way.... Someone please say they do something like this.... I really feel like I get a good handle on low end this way.... Or I might just be an idiot. Smile

Yeah...me too. I also use it to judge where I'm at with compression, particularly with material that's supposed to be all perfectly even, ie. radio-ish stuff where ideally every kick hit would be the same. I also just like how it feels.

You people are sick!

I don't do that, but I might start now that the idea is in my head.

I watch keenly just exactly how the rubberized rim that holds the woofer is moving... it needs to be doing these lightning-fast (but not too lightning-fast!) in's/out's, and the range over which this motion takes place needs to be right, as well... you need to use all your senses when you're mixing, not just listening!

you speaker touchers can do what you like at your places, but i pretty much only have one rule in the studio:

nobody touches my speakers.

i get nervous if people are even near them. i don't need to touch them because i can HEAR them. ooooh that rhymes. *makes hip hop hand gesture*

I haven't touched my speakers that way since, ahhh, high school?

I knew this producer from England named Collin. He said he knew that the bass drum sound was right when he could look through the glass and see little circles emanating from the drum, gradually growing larger like "air ripples," and coming towards his face in-time with the bass drum beats...

O. K. ...

Sometimes in the summer, I crank up a sub-bass and use mine for cheap air conditioning:

This is totally the weirdest thread I've ever seen.

I wonder if your fingers can detect freq's below 20Hz or above 20kHz. That would make a valid argument for tracking at higher sample rates. Surprised

Seems like I have seen some big name mixers talk about this a lot in interviews. Maybe with the NS-10s?

This thread is reminding me of this:

http://blog.ted.com/2007/04/06/evelyn_glennie/

Pretty amazing.

also reminds me of this....

and this: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-16681630
(he now "dreams in colour" - wild!)

I love this stuff.

When I started writing this reply I was really tempted to rant about phenomenological and psychological inquiry into the the interplay between the senses....decided that it wouldn't accomplish much... I'm going to go touch my speakers instead...

OK, I'll confess...

About a year and a half ago I had to refoam my Infinity R-9's and I touched the woof's for a bit while testing the new surrounds.

But it was just that one time. Embarassed
