Neil mentions the Black Dub project, which is totally a reason to want to work with Lanois I think.
Even if you totally disregard the mondo huge success he's had with most of what he touches, Black Dub is one of the most inspiring little groups I've ever heard. That shit makes me wanna get up and scream.

I also love Black Dub, but I gotta say, the youtube "in the studio" stuff blows me away even more.
Check out this and this.
The girl singer, BTW, is Chris Whitley's (RIP) daughter. I eagerly wait her solo debut because of stuff like this (same song w/ guitar live) and this (piano, live). Or, try this and this, etc. (the whiskey does it for me!) 
Disclaimer: I correspond with Dan Whitley, her uncle, regularly, and am a great admirer of his music, also.
