does anyone have any insight as to what recording and mixing gear was used on either album? desks? mics? pres? eqs? comps? or other misc equipment?

Danzig (I) self-titled was produced at two different locations during '87-'88.
-Atlantic Recording Studios and Chung King Metal
-mixed at Smoke Tree and Village
-Engineers: Dave Bianco, Steve Ett, Jim Scott

Danzig II was produced at two different studios during '89-'90.
-Hollywood Sound Recorders and Larrabee Sound Studios
-Engineers: Dave Bianco, Sylvia Massy, Brendon O'Brien, Martin Schmelze, Jim Scott

im betting they were both recorded to tape

They were definitely recorded to tape.

The drums on the first record had a weird quality to me. Not necessarily in a bad way. I have a theory that they were recorded at a faster speed and the tape was slowed down for overdubs.

both of those records were pre-ADAT and i could be mistaken but i don't think digital open reel stuff was terribly commonplace. i would bet the only digital thing those records touched was reverb - and lots of it.

I haven't listened to 'em inna while, but wasn't Danzig 1 at least famous for it's dry sound, at least the vox? I seem to recall it was a Rick Rubin thang ...

No real input as far as equipment used on those albums but I really like those albums. It would be interesting to see what they used on them.

I know FOR SURE there was at least one Hustler used on the record.

What's it mean when Rick Rubin is the most "normal" looking guy inna group of 7?

By "normal" I mean "least disturbed" and/or "sartorially questionable", altho' I guess the guy in the middle back looks aiight, too ...
