I'm not sure, but if we didn't have the plastic, I probably wouldn't have done it that way. The plastic ones are "solid" (as in sturdy and immovable), but they have symmetrical spaces underneath/inside... All we had to do was put them together and screw down a 1/2-inch plywood top and put some carpet on. It seems like the material and the spaces are a good combination for de-coupling/diffusing and the whole thing is level.

Years ago, in bands, we made risers out of wooden pallettes, and we also used the metal milk crates at times as well. But the wood isn't quality, it always seems uneven, and I think you'd have more work ahead of you to shim things up and make it look/sound good and be sturdy. Just mho; certainly worth a try if you can get the materials free/cheap and you have the time.
