"Rosemary Hemphill" by Surprise Chef
"Empty" by Barrie
"Barley" by Water From Your Eyes
"The Zone" by Lil Yachty
"The Trench Coat Museum" by Yard Act

Jalen Ngonda - Come Around and Love Me

This is my record of the year. It sounds like a 1970 Motown offering, the production is outstanding, songwriting catchy as hell. Just a wonderful record that is enjoyable on every track, every playback.

It was a great year for Ska.
I bought more new music this year than I usually do. I wouldn't really call myself a ska fan, but it is a sound that shaped my life.

Fishbone's first new record in forever - My favorite band. (I don't usually even think of them as ska, but this record is very ska. Killer stuff, original lineup. )
Rhoda Dakar - Version Girl (I liked this a lot more than I thought I would. Ska covers of non-ska classics. I call this record "will it skank?")
The Selector - Human Algebra (I liked this less than I thought I would. A little too perfect and polished for my taste.)
Carl Keil

Almost forgot: Please steal my drum tracks. and more.

Beatles "Red" and "Blue" album remixes with MAL (especially the early 2 or 4 track stuff, now spread out into stereo).

I'm pretty isolated from new music, it seems. But 2023 is the year that I discovered Louis Cole and all his stuff - Clown Core (that's where it started), Knower, etc.

Absolutely, but there's a whole ecosystem going there with a lot of interesting stuff. I'm really enjoying the music, and maybe we should discuss the whole "recording in a house including string section, horn section, choir..." thing on YouTube.

haha yeah he's got the drumkit on the stairway mezzanine, string section in the kitchen, bass in a hallway, it's wild! i'm not sure if it's a choice to do that or if studio time is that expensive in LA, but he makes it work.
