A control-room island versus client comfort?

There is something very European about your use of space..... like, only a Parisian would know how to make so little square footage work to be so much. It seems like your island is pretty integral part of that, otherwise it would be next to the other racks by the wall, and then where would the drums go?

Two months in to working at our new spot and I've yet to find a single occasion where I felt distanced from the band sitting on the couch. I they need to get closer I either give them my chair or they just sit on the credenza.
I think it has more to do with the total room layout and design than simply if there's an island or not. I've worked in rooms that weren't big enough to support islands before and it can be a bummer, but acoustics matter in control rooms and if you can avoid having an ear height wall of sheet metal it's worth looking in to.

Island yes
I agree with Marc [but then again I usually agree with Marc!!]Marc Alan Goodman wrote:I definitely feel like there needs to be room to move around comfortably, but for gear nerds like myself not having an island means having racks going up to the ceiling, which in turn means big, flat, untreated walls. .
I used to have a 5 ft tall rack filled with gear amongst the other racks and now I'm using 3 28" racks with an old counter top that was from one of the science labs at the former high school where super 70 now is located. The counter top fits perfectly by some miracle as the racks are slightly different heights.
I feel my work area is comfortable and I just spin around to make adjustments. Plus I can see whats going on and people can see me but they don't interfere. There is a couch behind the island that faces into the live space and people feel very comfortable there as they can watch the real show which are the performers and relax while I'm doing boring technical stuff. I have a couple of seats to my right that people can sit in if they want to be in the action or for doing guitar or bass overdubs.
So I vote yes as a new island owner. And as Roscoe said having the counter space is really valuable for so many things.

thanks my friend! I've been really busy since August and this month I finally had a little time to tart things up...and now it's getting busy again..Marc Alan Goodman wrote:The place is looking great Harley!
Hows the new spot?? I need pics...
I'm having a pro photographer friend come in soon and do some real pics and starting work on the super 70 website....
A big live music venue is opening 1 block from the studio so this town is really starting to take off.

I like the way the islands are set up at your studios. that wouldn't get it may way at all.
I was thinking of an island more like at a previous studio where it was basically like a huge countertop table that wrapped like an L shape behind you and to the left. it was super annoying to feel that enclosed and the musicians may have well been in the other room it was so big. I'm sure it didn't do much for the acoustics either. it was handy to have all that gear right at your disposal....but it wasn't a well thought out control room. design wise, its only saving grace was the rad tracking room.
