earworm medleys

Post by ubertar » Tue Dec 18, 2012 12:12 pm

Do you ever get these? Not just an earworm, but an earworm that leads into another earworm, and maybe more?

I've got an odd one going on right now... both elements of it are covers...

I have a two year old, and she loves Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood, which is inspired by Mr. Rogers. She was watching a bunch of episodes of it and the original online. The theme song of the new one is a variation of the old, and some parts are the same. I've had parts of both old and new bouncing around in my head, but a funny thing happens when it gets to the end...

Daniel Tiger (or Mr. Rogers):

And I'll be back when the day is through
And I'll have more ideas for you
And you'll have things you'll want to talk about
And I... will... too

David Lee Roth:

Cuz...
Iiiiiiiiiiii ain't got nobody
Nobody cares for me
Iiiiiiiii'm so sad and lonely...
etc.

Sometimes the DLR will morph into Louis Armstrong's version.

Earworms are freaking weird, eh? I'd say it's a pretty high percentage of the time that I get ones that make weird medleys like this.

I've got another one going now...

This time it's They Might Be Giants, a song off their kiddie disc, "Here Comes Science" that goes, "c'mon, c'mon let's meet the elements"... that somehow segues into the Police's "Every Breath You Take".

Am I really the only one that gets these? It seems like a really high % of the earworms I get fall into this category.

Like when Charles Earland's guitarist on the Intensity album Maynard Parker gets to that solo riff on "Morgan" that goes "dookadda dookadda dookadda"
it totally makes me jump to that line in Kurt Elling's "Freddie's Yen for Jen" where he scats "buketta bucketta buketta love is what she give to me".
I know , right?

I'm not familiar with those examples, but that's exactly the kind of thing I'm talking about.

Oh, I only know the one Elling tune as it was on a sampler cd attached to a Jazziz magazine issue back in the 90's. And I just got turned on to that Earland album this week, thus making the connection.
So much music out there, so little, um.. whoah, gotta go.

Awesome. That makes perfect sense, too.
