It depends on the rat breed. I dislike rats i. general, however I have seen a few Nordic rats be used as pets, by the local goth/punk/emo, or whatever kids call themselves these days.

They are cleaner than gerbils, and are very intelligent.

+1. For the kids, we've had fish, guinea pigs, gerbils and rats. Rats were the best. Wife hated those long skinny tails though. Gave her the creeps!

The "chick magnet" pet (pardon the vernacular, it was accurate for the time) when I was in high school and early college years was the ferret.

My friend had one he'd take to bars with him, and he (the ferret) never failed to ellicit introductions...
