The National

Just got done watching their Lallapalooza set stream on the U-choob.

What a great band!

Horn section, ebows, falsetto BV's, a hot drummer who barely plays his cymbals, sometimes 2 basses, dynamic performance, wonderful arrangements, great lyrics ...

And Berninger (too bad about the name  ) drank a bottle of wine while on stage; the camera showed the empty rolling around as he went into the crowd singing "I don't wanna fuck this up", got back on stage, rolled around in spilled wine in his 3 piece suit, went back into the crowd ...

What a great band.

I really thought High Violet was their best, but haven't really spent much time with the new album admittedly.

cool to hear their live performance is crazier than their music lets on too. I always imagined them to be really subdued.

I love High Violet, what was the first record I had of theirs.

But I gotta say, I don't like the production too much; while not un-dynamic, it feels dense but crushed and lacking in sonic depth.

The latest seem more open, but I do wish they'd let themselves be just a touch more un-polished; not all of us "dad-rockers" abhor dirt, and some of us even like the garage.

the new record is one of their best I think, the band rules even though I'm often embarrassed to admit it.
