Subkick question

Post by Shellacattack » Mon Sep 16, 2013 2:52 pm

This may be a stupid question, but I've experimented for a bit and tried to find an answer online to no avail. So here goes...

I have an old pair of Event Project Studio 6's, and I thought I'd try one in front of the kick as a subkick. I have used guitar speaker cabs as subkicks before, but never a smaller speaker, like these Events. So I use my usual path - out of the input of the Events, and into the DI of a Sebatron vmp2000e, but I'm not getting a signal.

The Project Studio 6's are powered monitors. Is there something in their signal path that may prevent their use as a microphone, as opposed to using a passive speaker? Just to be safe, I tried them on as well; still no signal.

I'm betting I'm missing something very basic... any thoughts?

Thanks guys!

That's not gonna work. Gotta be passive. Unless my understanding of electricity is completely wrong. You could open them up and grab and put leads on the woofer outputs, but just using the "in" as an "out" ain't gonna work in this case. There's an amplifier between the in and the speaker in those.

Your plugging the input of an amplifier - not the output of a speaker - into your preamp. Not going to work.

That won't work but any passive woofer will work. Pawn shops, garage sales and even thrift stores always have old subs or cheap house speakers. I love experimenting with little projects like that. Worst case scenario is you record that track and don't end up using it. Just keep it in phase with your other mic/s.
