Read this while you're at it - http://www.amazon.ca/Detroit-American-Autopsy-Charlie-LeDuff/dp/1594205345

Very good but very depressing.

That's of course, assuming you don't mean downtown Detroit, where real estate values are skyrocketing.

My studio is in the back of some property that I own. It's really hard to imagine doing it any other way for me. For one, you know you can build/modify the structure(s) any way you want. And then you also have built-in rent control. I've observed that one of the most common reasons for studios having to call it quits is that what once was an affordable part of town suddenly explodes in popularity and their rent goes up beyond what a studio can afford. I'm not willing to take that risk on a lease somewhere.

there's plenty out in western mass too, but then you're living in a depressing, busted city. i mean, i'm sure we could all afford our own buildings in detroit.....

You can afford the buildings, but can you afford the mercenaries to keep the facilities and clients safe?

that's what's happening here too. there's a ton of condos going up all down my street. and fancy yuppie lofts. 1100 sq ft for $619,000.

me and ms morespace have a bunch of friends who are all like...we can't afford to live here any more. we're all looking to get out of here asap. it's not a bad city but it's just for rich people now.

That's exactly what's happening in Seattle and what my friends and I are realizing. A great city, but now for rich people.

It's so expensive that I can't afford to save money to relocate to a lower cost of living situation NEXT DOOR to this city. Would love to move out to the woods nearby, but that takes money as well.. so I'll probably just end up pay check to pay checking for the rest of my life… depressing.

trods, let's build a compound out in the woods!

2 living spaces
tracking room
mixing room
mastering suite (i'm fancy, i get a suite)
grow room
hot tub
bmx track

that should do it.

i'll whip up some plans on these cocktail napkins here, you can do all the construction.

That sounds about right! Of course, you have to have a suite. Its not mastering unless its in a suite. We also need to provide a studio/work space for Karla. She does photo, video, sculpture, other visual arts.

There definitely will be a garden, bee hives, and chickens.

YOU LOVE CONSTRUCTION THOUGH!!!

I was just reorganizing the "paint, construction, tools and crap" shelves last night. The milk crates full of random Home DeSpot bags with bits of stuff and parts, the paint trays, the extra conduit connectors, all the random leftovers from my build out, the unused tube of CAULK.. gave me a near fucking anxiety attack... And I've been done with the build for over 4 years.
