Anyone heard of an avant-garde/indie art guitarist who recorded guitar one string at a time? Weird concept, but I heard him on WFMU years back and can't track down his name. Cut-and-paste stuff, very precise, mechanized sound, but also organic, as it is guitar music - kind of like the Books, only more monochromatic.

Thanks in advance...

J

Can you post the relevant section for those of us without archive subscriptions? Thanks.

Thanks - Deerhoof definitely did a lot of cut and paste recording early on, but that's not who I had in mind - the guy I'm thinking of not only edited the linear flow, but also recorded one string at a time, building up chords that way instead of strumming. Why the hell would you do this is a reasonable question, but it's an interesting approach. Totally different attack:decay relation, sounds like a harpsichord. A little reminiscent of Steve Reich's Electric Counterpoint.

Shit. No. I don't have a subscription either and didn't notice till now that the link is only a teaser. I read the article way back when. Very interesting and crazy recording techniques mostly built around not wanting to pay for a real version of Pro Tools.

haha, that deerhoof article stands out in my mind as being probably the most annoying thing i've ever read in TO. so many things in there just really bugged me. i know they're apparently the nicest people in the world, but reading that just made me want to punch them.

anyway.

def leppard did the one string at a time thing on 'hysteria'.

*is absolutely no help at all*

Robbie Macintosh did it with Chris Thomas on some of the Pretenders stuff.
