My gong, that is...
Just got a 33 1/2" gong. It has dragons on it!
It's got a nice deep fundamental tone. It doesn't have as much sustain and resonance as I'd like, so I don't think I'm going to hang on to it. It looks super cool, though.

There's some clipping on the strongest strike.
I made the stand before receiving the gong. The last pic is of my 22" wind gong, just for comparison. The big one is huge!
Mine's bigger than Bonham's!

I use a gong as a gong in my recordings sometimes, but more often I use it as a kind of pseudo-plate reverb. I'll reamp a track with the amp right in front of the gong, with a piezo on the gong going direct, for the reverb. I don't think the dragon gong will work as well for this as the wind gong. There's less sustain and shimmer to it. The low fundamental is really cool, though.
The gong sounds good if you sit right in front of it, but if you stand up and hit it, it's kind of unimpressive. That won't matter for recording... just gotta find the sweet spot to put the mic. Actually I think it needs two mics... one close in the middle for the fundamental, and one nearer to the edge for the shimmer. The sound clip is a 57 close up to the center.

Found one just like it, only smaller, on ebay:

They list it as being made between 1800 and 1849, but who knows if that's accurate.
