Software for selling downloads from my website?

Post by tjcasey1 » Sun Nov 30, 2014 6:22 am

Any experience with this?

We're selling hi rez files and would like to offer them as downloads in addition to selling them as 24-bit DVDs. Heck, I'd like to be able to have people download the DVD and burn it to disc.

I need to allow people to pay with paypal and then get an email with a link to the download. I had some software that supposedly did this about ten years ago but it totally sucked. Hopefully someone knows of something that works fairly well nowadays?

Thanks!

i'm surprised no one has chimed in on this yet.

there are a rapidly number of growing platforms you can use as a digital storefront.

http://www.shopify.com/sell/music
is probably one of the most popular platforms, and the only standalone one i've used. but they can seem a bit pricey (plans start at $14/month but if you have more than a few products you'll need to do the next level up, which is $29/month)

https://selz.com/
is a newer platform that takes a percentage of sales instead of a monthly fee (5% + $0.25 per transaction). not sure who's using it

https://easydigitaldownloads.com/
is a newer option, available for free as a wordpress plugin, and is just now being ported from wordpress to a standalone product (still in beta). it looks nice, but since i have zero experience using it, i can't say for sure if it's right for your purposes. a free option is always nice, tho--especially if you have a developer handy to customize it.

of course, if you want to get social about it, and have your products available and browsable among others, there are other options:
http://bandcamp.com -- but large downloads are restricted, so probably not an option)
https://sellfy.com/ -- a nice looking site with lots of different content (audio, video, and software)

there are a few others listed here: http://www.hongkiat.com/blog/services-s ... -products/

anyway, this is a booming area in tech startups right now. everybody wants to sell digital products (i blame smashing magazine--http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2014/07 ... ts-part-1/)

if you are looking for a developer, my rates are extremely flexible for projects that i love (ie, will work for freebies :) )

If you are using Wordpress to host your sites, then Woocommerce is a good option if you want to keep everything in-house.

Other than that, services like Bandcamp are good options too.

I actually found out that Paypal handles this. If you're good with html (I'm not), they give instructions. If not, lots of companies sell drag-and-drop code for cheap. I'll be trying one soon.

I also found a company that does burn-on-demand. You upload the files to them and get a link for your site. The customer clicks "buy" and the company presses the disc and mails it out right away. It'll cost you $5.38 per disc including the shipping. Unbelievable.

if you like that, then check out Kunaki.com. You upload your audio files to them and they burn a CD on demand - with CD case and artwork for $1.00 (your customer pays for your CD + shipping). now that's pretty unbelievable. 8) They provide the URL that you simply paste into your web page (HTML) and it works via your paypal

here's an example:

and yeah, I know these are plain ol' 16/44 CDs, but those are the kind that play in everyone's car...

That's the company! They do these DVDs as well - they're just regular DVDs.

Life is good...

I finally purchased two low=cost items from vibralogix - "linklok paypal" and "viewcart" ($45 purchase if you buy them together). Both are just codes, but I really don't know HTML - I just drag things around invDreamweaver to make my website.

It's been a good experience - in switching over to "code" editing, I've learned a bit more about HTML and am actually enjoying it.

Now we sell downloads of our albums in a package that include 24-bit WAVs, 256kbps MP3s, and pdf graphics. I think it's the way to go for the future.

We still put the stuff on iTunes and amazon for web surfers, but we direct people to our site for high quality versions of our releases.

I'll post links as soon as I'm completely done.

My hosting service (1and1) has a download selling widget included with my package...though honestly I haven't dug into it yet...
