MicSwap - input wanted on a new iOS recorder and mic modeler

Post by garysun » Mon Dec 29, 2014 7:54 pm

Hello TapeOp community!

I would love your feedback and ideas on an iOS app I recently released. It's a recorder and mic modeler. It's called MicSwap and it's awesome.

Besides being a way better recorder than Apple's voice memo recorder, It's a mic modeler with a gorgeous interface. There's many mics you're probably familiar with. it's also handy for home recording and live performance as it can be used like a vocal pedal giving you different sounds every time you swap mics.

And.. you can put yourself in different studio environments like Joel's amazing and beautiful Studio G in Brooklyn NY.

Check it out! There's a free version and a pro version.

very neat idea.

A couple questions:

Are limited to using the iPhone mic unless you purchase the full option? Maybe a short trial period would be helpful, so that you could do a full eval before dropping $20.

Also, I can't see the prices on the additional mics & rooms...it just prompts me to enter my Apple ID...what do they cost?

As far as usage...I like the layout and interface. Having the gain control right on the front is super handy. The waveform editor is pretty neat, very simple yet precise. I did have some issues with it crashing when opening the editing tools, when switching mics, and going into the setting menu as well. While none of that really bothers me, a crash during a recording or during an edit would be frustrating.

Currently I'm using an iPhone 4s, and I use Harmonic Dog DAW for remote overdubs with a Sonoma Wireworks Guitar Jack 2, and its rock solid and perfect for overdubs, tracking, and quick field edits.

I still see a use for a tool like this for quick tracks, and providing some different options for quick edits on a single track.

Thanks for the feedback!

Hopefully you can get a decent idea of how the mics vary the sound, because once you use an external mic it's just gonna be way more hifi and apparent than Apples built in mic. Ofcourse the fidelity will vary based on what mic and interface you're using. I'd recommend the Apogee Duet 2. That thing sounds great, connects to iOS devices and you can use any mic with it.

Once you're signed in it'll tell you how much each item costs (99 cents). After you sign in it then asks if you want to buy it for that price.

The crashing is not good. There's an update due out any minute now that improves stability. That update just came out today for the pro version. Just waiting on Apple to approve the free version and it'll be released. Also, if you're device has little space that will cause crashing, just like a computer would.

Keep the feedback coming. It's so cool to see how everyone uses the app their own way. I hope you get good use out of it. Thank so much for your input!
