DIY Monitor Controller

Post by Nick Franklin » Mon Jan 26, 2015 3:04 pm

Just knocked up this little bad boy. Fully passive controller based around a nice Alps potentiometer. 3 in, 3 out. VU meters too.

Nick:
Very classy look. Just wondering: no phase reverse along with the stereo/mono? and no provision to switch a sub-woofer in/out? What are you driving the VU meters with?

I built something similar, but does not look as pro as yours...nice job!

If I connect a VU meter with a 3.6K resistor I get a rise in THD on the Audio Precision analyzer. The meter drive should be buffered by an opamp or something to avoid that.

But Jim, haven't you heard? Opamps are the devil, and THD is good!

To the OP: Can you share a schematic and/or internal shots?

This 'Jim' isn't into THD either but the 'straight-wire' monitor controller I built (similar to Nick's) sounds pretty good. Sure I lose a few dB but I have gain to spare in my monitoring chain. My wiring is short and high quality, so capacitance isn't much of an issue either. But, FWIW, I would definitely use an op amp buffer/driver if I was integrating VU meters

Hey guys,

My fried Joe Malone (JLM Audio) sells a little circuit for buffering and driving VU meters. That's what I've got in this bad boy.

Nicely done! I'm dreaming of making a controller with these features. Badass!
