Mastering Rant:I could care less bout your Lavery converters

Post by roscoenyc » Fri Mar 06, 2015 1:20 pm

I could care less about your Lavery's

Don't try to talk me out of 192.
Labels are requesting 192 for the HD services like HD Tracks and PONO.
Labels are paying for mastering.
Get some new converters!\

General not pointed at anyone specific but about everyone at the same time comment!

q: Do you track digitally at 192 or just printing the mixes at 192?

Been tracking 96/24 for years.
Hybrid mixing through outboard and console to 1/2" Analog.
Can take analog to mastering or 192 prints from the 1/2" to mastering.

Also been doing some 192 stuff that stays in the box after capture.

Point is labels want it.
Customer should be able to get it.

Edumacate the ignorant, puh-leeze.

What about "Lavery's" is the issue, vs. 192?

(FWIW, I record 44.1, 32 bit float.)

Because Lavry AD only goes to 96kHz and some labels have decided in their infinite wisdom to offer 192kHz recordings. Hence the Lavry owners cry about having to replace their lush AD with something else.

That said I'd assume ultimately the quality goes down when they replace those Lavrys with something shittier but with bigger numbers.

Ah, I see, thanx.

And it seems like roscoenyc has a great work-around, then ...

Meanwhile, I'm still using my 10+ years old Delta 44 for my li'l bedio recordings, and happy with it.

Do people find it unethical to just upsample in the box as the last step? I doubt anyone but the bats will hear the difference...

even the bats wouldn't care.

dan makes a pretty good argument for why 192 is silly, at best:

http://www.lavryengineering.com/pdfs/la ... _audio.pdf

haven't ever had anyone send 192 mixes, or ask for masters back at that rate...we'll see what happens in 5 years, but i'm keeping my lavrys for now.

Out of curiosity, looking at the Lavry AD-10, what would you use to interface with a computer?

thankfully i haven't had to deal with any 192 mix requests. we did one tracking session at 192 for a japanese label with a freelance engineer.

192 really bums me out. and i'm into striving for higher quality. it just bums me out since it's basically a catchy marketing catch phrase...

IMO a label asking for 192 is like David St.Hubbins' girlfriend asking if it was done in 'Dubly'.

I love me some 192 MP3's. Way better than 128 or 96. But if you use Beats phones you don't really even need dubly anymore.

It's hard to get excited about something as esoteric as 192kHz sampling rates when it might just be that the talent and the song have the biggest impact on the listener's perception...the song rules and the equipment serves the song...at least that's the way I learned.

As a bedio recordist, that kinda stuff is a bit too expensive for my needs, at the present time, anywhat.

That said, I do wanna know about it, because mebbe someday ...
