I haven't recorded a ton of bassists, or bass amps, but my favorite bass sound I ever got was my SF Champ with a 50's style Weber speaker at a pretty low volume with either a Sennheiser e602 or a 57.
Lately I've been using a RE 320 on my bassists TC Electronic amp. I'd like to come up with a good DI sound to use, but they all the options I've had and tried always sound small to me.

So the other day I was working on a cue and I wanted to get a "filling" bass to rock with the live drums so I didn't have to play any other stuff (as opposed to a bass that doesn't take over everything). I ended up running my baritone acoustic direct into my chain of Moog pedals, then direct...turned into hairy dead weather bass...loved it.
I've totally been having fun with bass lately, using octave pedals and distortion,
(and here),
slide,
amps and DI,
fretless and A/E, etc.
Today I played a Hohner headless into the Brick and an 1176 clone, and then tripled the bass line on the chorus; it can be heard here (some of the above might have doubled parts, also.)
