reribboning UK

Post by Bobbydecay » Fri Jul 24, 2015 11:47 am

Hey! I've acquired a Chinese made but not shit ribbon mic with a fried-by-phantom-power down a bad XLR ribbon in it. I may have opened it up, had a poke around and made it worse. I am probably but not definitely too drunk with any of my spare time outside of my day job to fix this thing myself. I am in the UK.

Anyone got any thoughts on the matter?

Thanks

Install a new ribbon - kinda difficult but fairly cheap to get materials on the E-bog.

Install a new ribbon motor - easier but not cheap to get materials on the E-bog.

Send it out for repair - easiest but expensive and possibly a substantial wait time.

In the future, poke around other things than ribbon mic's when drinking.

Sage advice thanks.

Option A sounds worth perusing. It's not that I was drunk at the time of poking, more that I didn't invest as much time as I should have in the project due to my busy drinking schedule ahead. I can shift around my schedule if its worth it, and it sounds like I've got nothing to lose.

Any idea's who I can send it to if I want to look into option D?

Oh and I'm new and don't know what an E-bog is.

Thanks again.

Some people have issues saying eBay.

...and they never even heard of gumtree.

From what I understand, if you can play Operation without making the nose buzz, or do the shaky hand game with the bent wire coathanger at the funfair, and you have a passion for making ships in a bottle, doing a re-ribbon is easy.

If you solve most problems with a hammer, and are challenged by furniture from MFI or Ikea, move on.

As far as ribbon repairs, I believe Jon at Shinybox - who did good for me on one of his what needed work - will work on 'em.

But he is on this side of the pond ...

Sounds like there's a gap in the market for a British Jon from shinybox.

..won't be me

Try Microphone Parts http://microphone-parts.co.uk/
for, well, microphone parts! I've built 2 of their kits - very impressed. They do ribbon parts now too.

Another thumbs up for Xaudia here - good fella - knows what he's doing - very reasonable and very quick. And actually answers emails!
