1965 or earlier Fender bass, 15' straight instrument cable, Neve 1272 preamplifier, Teletronix (Urei) La2a compressor.

Oh, and a good bass player.

No, actually, that was the year Leo Fender sold to CBS.

CBS changed a lot of manufacturing methods afterwards, with mixed results.

Pre 1965 Fenders are cherished instruments.

It's also worth experimenting with roundwound vs. flatwound strings.
Sometimes the deep solid fundamental tone of flatwounds blends better with other instruments. And others, the wiry grit you can get with roundwounds is just the ticket.

LaBella and Ernie Ball flatwounds are great for woofy old-skool thump while Thomastik-Infeld Jazz Flats and D'Addario Chromes have a springier, brighter, more modern tonality.

I'm not against active electronics or extra low or high strings, but they can cause the bass to take up way more space in the mix.
