After 20 years of searching, I have found "the one". The Line Audio CM3 destroys most all other SDC mics for acoustic guitar. It makes the Octava mods sound harsh.
I A-B'd it side by side with a well maintained, KM84 and they sounded very very close.
The CM3 is a stubby little thing, but has the flattest chart I have seen. They are made in Sweden. I can;t speak for their other mic, the omni OM3, but I have heard amazing things about it.
Unreal that it costs 160

I am curious what other mics have you tried? I am sure you know that there are a LOT of different ones...
AKG, NEUMANN, SCHOEPS, DPA, GEFELL, PELUSO, TELEFUNKEN,
Tube? ... solid state?
i went through a few (AKG 535, AKG 751 reissue, Josephson c42) to arrive at the AKG 460 with Jim Williams mod. it was the smoothest and least hyped of that batch...
to my ears!

I actually haven't used it on guitar yet, but i've been recording oud with the peluso p-28. I'm quite impressed with this mic.
I have a pair of line audio cm3s which i quite like, but not for everything. I find their sensitivity a little low, so for quieter things they don't usually win out. On quieter sources i'm liking the beyer mc930s. They have a lot of "reach" but to my ear at least are not harsh or brittle on most things.
I was using the cm3s on piano, but didn't love them in that context, they sounded a little wooly there to me.
