Tascam ms-16: tape lifter failing and recapping

Post by joshdfrazier » Sat Jan 16, 2016 3:46 pm

So, I noticed that my machines lifters have, intermittently stopped working. I took the whole machine apart, cleaned and lubed all of the moving parts for the tape lifter assembly. Marginally better, but they still fail to engage during rr/ff most of the time.

I did notice however, that literally every cap on the power supply pcb was either budging, leaking, or both! Once I put the ms-16 back together I went home and ordered all new panasonic/nichicon caps for the psu.

So I guess my question is, would failing caps not providing adequate power to motors/solenoids be to blame? Or should I be looking elsewhere?

bad capacitors seem like a likely culprit. When I had a similar issue with my MS-16 it was just a mechanical/lubrication issue. since you already addressed that I'd wager that it's the caps.

If someone has cranked up the FF/RWD tension/speed pots, there might be too much tension for the lifters to move.Verify the voltage to the lifter solenoid.
