I don't think that would work.
LED lights produce very little heat.
What's going on in a lava lamp is the heat from the bulb below brings the temperature of the wax up to it's melting point. Then the wax swirls in the water.

You can get LED glitter lamps and stuff, but the real thing requires the heat for the wax.

In general, yes, that's what goes in most remote controls.

As decoration? I've seen them around security cameras and stuff, to provide night vision, but that's not really decoration.

As Drone says, IR LEDs are pretty common, but they're mainly used for stuff like TV remotes and motion detectors, where they produce beam that's invisible to the eye.

They aren't a good means of heat transference. The couple of parts I just checked in datasheets are rated to less than 0.1 watt max dissipation. Not much power means not much heat.
