Removing switch from Shure 55 mic?

Post by devnulljp » Tue Mar 15, 2016 10:07 am

Anyone ever successfully removed the on/off switch from a Shure 55 mic?
I see the Super55 doesn't have the switch, which makes more sense to me. I'd like to just bypass it completely. Probably just leave the dead switch in there. It's just a couple of wires right?

I haven't done it with this specific mic but I've done it on some old EVs. There's not much too it. Depending on how it's wired the switch will shunt the + to ground or both + & - to ground. You can usually just bypass the switch and solder the wires right to the jack.

My old 55 has a 3 position impedance switch on the back underneath the headbasket. It looks like a flathead screw, controlling a flimsy phenolic wafer assembly. Bypassing that might be of interest

If you check the manual there's a picture and a circuit diagram.

The previous statement is from a guy who records his own, and other projects for fun. No money is made.
