Yamaha MG10 and up series for keyboard-centric studio
Anyone have any experience with this line of mixers? I'm going to have some cash soon, so I'm getting ready to buy. The Yamaha MG16/4 got a good review in Sound on Sound and I got a catalog where it was on sale, so I'm interpreting that as serendipity...The board is sort of prosumer, but...well, I'm...

Re: How did you survive the BlackOut 2003
Considering all the walking I did (~130 blocks?), I'm in the best shape I've ever been in! =) Really, it wasn't bad - I read somewhere there were *less* arrests Thursday night than on the average summer night in NYC. I was all set to camp out outside of Grand Central, but then I wandered into the me...

Re: How do I know what Radio Shack stuff to snag?
Ok, so how'd you guys find out about this stuff? Did you buy at random or get recommendations from other recordists?

How do I know what Radio Shack stuff to snag?
I believe in the power of Radio Shack. I believe it when TapeOppers and like-minded musicians tout the virtues of underappreciated and underpriced pieces of gear. But, here's my question - since I'm slowly putting together and upgrading my studio piece by piece (I'm new to all this), how do I know w...

Re: The least expensive interesting-sounding thing you've bo
I'll post in proxy for the recording engineer to whom I gave my Roland Jazz Chorus (which I got for $200) to fix, and who then closed down his studio and stopped returning my calls. He definitely got something nice for not much. Of course "not much" is going to turn into "a mouthful of busted teeth"...

I just went into the "True Ballers Only" section even though I'm just a white guy from CT. I hope they don't check IP addresses...

Re: The least expensive interesting-sounding thing you've bo
Oh yeah - and I dug a Farfisa organ out of somebody's trash (ok, I was standing there and trying to figure out a way to get it into my Subaru when the owner came out and offered to drive it to my house in his van. nice guy). The speaker's kinda blown so it distorts easily, and it has an input jack (...

Re: The least expensive interesting-sounding thing you've bo
I gotta add another vote for the old Casios. I can't remember what model I have, but I love it - the great thing about the old ones is that they did an awful job of emulating real instruments in such a fantastic way. See, nowadays the technology is good enough so that the "trumpet" setting sounds cl...

Re: Tricks to use on backup vocals
This is sort of basic, but the "backing vocals" post reminded me - sometimes when I record a track of me singing harmony, I'll boost the mids and lows a tad. All of a sudden I sound sort of like Barry White.

Re: Simple analog drum loops for ACID?
Well, if you want real drums, there's http://www.betamonkeymusic.com/. I know this guy and have heard some demos but haven't bought the loops yet, so I can't vouch for their quality. But it's on my list. And it's only like $10, anyway. There's some analogue drum loop CDs...Masters of Motown was grea...

Re: Digital Keyboard
An Sk-20 doesn't have a piano sound, though (can you believe I let an SK-30 for $50 pass me by one weekend? I'm so friggin stupid.) For $300 you're probably only going to afford a tone module without a keyboard, unless you get soemthing like a Yamaha PSR. I think the Yamaha PSR series have good pian...

Re: "Re-amping" without mics?
I appreciate the replies, but that's not quite what I'm asking; I don't have any interest (for now) in "traditional" reamping. What I'm asking is, will running something my soundcard's 1/4 out to my tube pre-amp's in, and then back into my soundcard's in melt anything or add lots of unpleasant noise?

Re: "Re-amping" without mics?
Yeah, that's the one I had seen advertised in Tapeop. I'm using keys, though...aren't keyboard 1/4 outs and headphones already "line level"?
