Tape sources?
I'm going to break out my old Fostex R8 for laughs.
Does anyone know of a source for tape?
I did a search online and found a place selling 1/4' 1800 reels for $23.00!!!!!!
Is tape this stupidly priced now?

I searched the forum for opinions on the Nomad plug-in's and found them to be favorable. BUT these reviews were 2 years ago and software has gotten better.

I've been a sax player for 30+ years. My favorite mics to record with are ribbons. The Coles 4038 is very nice. I played on a friends album and we used a Royer 121. It came out very good. I've used the 421 and it works OK. It's good on soprano, which needs some mellowing out. A 441 is better and is ...

Relax Francis, ... I didn't suggest that ALL the recording were crap. I stated that most don't have a good sound quality (this is separate from the music and performance) I think I stated that I wasn't judging the performances or playing. Most of the records you listed are good. There are some that...

Yeah, I am against the whole words-we-hate thing, though of course I don't have to listen to people saying them all day. This one takes a bit of thought... I'd say that the true "vintage" sound is background noise, covering up other problems. That was the most interesting thing about the Aspen Pittman interview in the latest issue, his opinion that with digital we're now hearing a lot of weird stuff that tape noise (...

Second, no debate over whether there were good albums made in the 70's, 60's 50's etc. Many of them are good not because of the recording but because of the music. That's a bunch of crap. First off, a record is great because of the music. Period. A great recording can help, of course, but a great r...

I'm sure there were at least a few good records made before 1994? I didn't think anyone would ever be debating THAT. Now, whether there have been any good records made SINCE is another story :D first off before 1994 is not vintage unless you are 3. 3 year olds should not be allowed here. Second, no...

To be honest this was a bait 'um topic but one that I am interested in. I'm not on a mission to end new vintage or anything, I just wants peoples opinon on what they think made a good album and how the gear helped give it that sound. BTW classic and vintage are not from the 80's and 90's based on my...

That "vintage" sound....what is it?
It seems to me that there is so much hype and talk of vintage gear and new products trying to attain "that classic sound". I want to know, what is that classic sound? I have my opinions on what great sound in a recording is or was, but a lot of vintage recording are just old and suffer from poor qua...

There have been some good posts on this and it's an interesting topic. As someone who used to work at a few music manufacturing companies before getting my head straight, getting out of making gear and going postal (into post production that is) here is my info to share. MSRP = whatever dollar figur...
