Ok - doesn't have to be a bar - but maybe not Acoustic Cafe...had a falling out with Rich after my last show there...when he tried to stiff me out of $400. Always have a friend count heads to make sure you get paid the full amount you're owed...that's a tip kids, write that down. ;-) So...can we get...

depending on my schedule - I'd be up for it. I'm in darien, so my preference would be somewhere in fairfield county.

SoNo is usually hopping on Thursday nights...but we can hit Westport or Fairfield. Can we get an idea of where everyone is coming from?

I think it all depends on how you use (or abuse) the technology. With every tool you can do good or cause harm. A hammer is a great tool but can also be used to cause great harm. Keep in mind, I've used everything from 4-track cassette to 8, 16 & 24 track reel-to-reel (tascam, fostex, studer, otari)...

can you hang some mics above the stage? One center, one about halfway between center & stage-right & another halfway between center & stage-left? or divide the stage up even more if you have more than 3 mics to use. omnis might work best...right over the area the performers will be. print each mic t...

the fist problem might be that the strings are a bit too low for slide - meaning you'll get a lot of "clanking". typically slide players raise the action so they can get good contact without hitting frets or the fretboard with the slide. Are you in an open tuning? Tends to help the whole process. In...

I won't pretend to know why, but I find dynamic mics (ribbon or moving coil) take EQ better than most condensers.

It has certainly changed which mics I grab first.

I did a similar test using my Metric-Halo Mobile IO 2882 (MIO) as a summing device (it sports an 80 bit internal summing matrix supporting 18 mono/9 stereo feeds). I did the same mix ITB & then bussed out (4 stereo buses) to the MIO. It was an eye opener. I'll do rough mixes ITB for convenience, but...

Answering as a recording guitarist I would use 2 mics: one at the neck/body joint & one just behind the bridge (where the meat of the sound will come from). Distance is dependent on how bright/present you want the recording to be. Answering as a classical/audiophile recordist my suggestion would be ...

It really depends on whether you want an authentic big band sound or a more modern sound. I like to start with 3 omnis across the front of the band (just behind the conductor's position). Basically divide the band into quarters and (from left to right) put the mics at the 1/4, 1/2 & 3/4 mark. Get th...

[engage sarcasm filter] Of course the Layla album was recorded in 10 days...and that was a double album! :) [disengage filter] but seriously - it sounds like your only recourse is to sit down and talk with the band. I always hate that conversation because most bands take it to mean "you suck - so sh...

I charge $45/hr. I would say about 80% of my work is location recording of classical & traditional jazz performances (orchestras, choirs, small chamber groups, et al) in the CT/NYC area, and the rest is primarily acoustic based artists...everything from indie acoustic-rock groups to singer/songwrite...

Wow, I knew people liked the SM7, but I had no idea that it was this well liked. Makes me glad that I own one! Anybody try it on banjo or violin? No...but love it on mandolin & acoustic guitar - makes them sound fat & clear. Other than that, it is my go to vocal mic because it just sounds so good o...

I'm recording an album for someone now who is so much more comfortable doing guitar & voice together so I came up with this method: GTR: KM184 at the neck/body joint aimed slightly down and angled towards the body slightly. VOX: SM7b slightly below chin level aiming up towards the mouth. So the mics...
